Arrival in Limsa Lominsa

Sets the stage: the Adventurers' Guild, Limsa's pirate past and the kidnapping rumors that run through the whole Limsa story.

SummaryAnalysis

Coming to Limsa Lominsa

Main story #0, level 1

Ryssfloh sends you to the Drowning Wench to register with the Adventurers' Guild and meet its owner, Baderon. Ryssfloh warns the alleys are dangerous and asks the Navigator, the sea goddess Llymlaen, to guide you. Ryssfloh's name means "Giant Flea" in Roegadyn.

The Yellowjackets can't solve the 'spate o' kidnappin's'. This problem runs in the background of the whole Limsa story. It starts with the tattooed men at Summerford (step 4). It ends in Feint and Strike (step 19).

Making a Name

Side quest, level 1

Niniya sends you to collect herbs that might be illegal "dream flowers" and hand them in. They are only common lavender: Niniya was playing a joke on you. Niniya says adventurers have met at this place for almost twenty years.

Niniya's first prank turns into a real lead: you spread the kidnapping warning that runs through the main story (MSQ #0-#19).

The kidnappings

Suspiciously Sober

Side quest, level 1

Ahldskyf says a scruffy sailor offered him much gil (money) to meet adventurers. Fearing a link to the kidnappings, he sends you to the guard Glazrael. A hired captain, he was one gil short of his own ship when the Calamity struck.

Remember the kidnappings, a thread in the main story. They first come up in MSQ #0 Coming to Limsa Lominsa. In MSQ #4 Lurkers in the Grotto, the farm workers of Summerford fear them. See also Lost and Found.

Way of the Arcanist

Arcanist quest, level 1

Murie praises your choice and explains that the guildmaster cannot be reached for now. Murie sends you to Thubyrgeim, the acting leader, whose mind is sharp and critical but whose manner is welcoming.

Your class story: K'lyhia's past with the exiled pirate Doesmaga, played out at Mealvaan's Gate and Oschon's Embrace.

Duty Calls

Map quest, level 1

P'tahjha explains that some merchants try to dodge duty and must be chased down. P'tahjha has you carry ledgers about them to Sundhimal at the Octant and Latisha at the Bismarck, places where merchants gather.

How customs are enforced; Mealvaan's Gate returns in the Arcanist quests.

Edelweiss, Edelweiss

Map quest, level 1

J'nasshym sends a thank-you gift to the Dutiful Sisters of the Edelweiss, who did a service for her firm. She does not say what they do, but says they are more than they seem and that they reassure businesses like hers.

Meet J'nasshym, who picks your shoes for the Admiral's banquet (MSQ #20).

Proper Procedure

Map quest, level 1

Sweetnix is too scared to take his monthly import papers to Mealvaan's Gate, so you carry them. He is late every month. Overjoyed by P'tahjha's kind words, he pays you. He calls himself a "beauteous gobbie", though his -ix name marks him as male.

Limsa's customs up close; P'tahjha of Mealvaan's Gate also gives Duty Calls.

Trade and the city

The Right Price

Map quest, level 1

Swozblaet has you pose as a customer and secretly note the prices of Iron Thunder, Kyokyoroon and Syneyhil. Swozblaet calls it a simple task. You then hand the price list to Baensyng, as Swozblaet asked.

Pirate loot vs fair prices; Swozblaet heads the league of MSQ #1's lost octant.

Pirates and the AdmiralTrade and the city

It's Time to Duel

Map quest, level 1

This fighter begs you not to hit him, thinking you want a duel. He explains the Maelstrom opened a new dueling ground on this pier, so strangers keep challenging him. He sends you to the drill sergeant and fears a "bloodthirsty Lalafell" from yesterday.

Backstory for the Maelstrom's dueling ground on the Wolves' Den Pier.

Pirates and the Admiral

Close to Home

Main story #1, level 1

Baderon sends you to touch the aetheryte, a travel crystal, to see Swozblaet with an old octant, and to visit the Arcanists' Guild. He blames the Calamity, or the ale, for his poor memory. He urges you to help people in need.

This is for arcanists only. Murie reveals that their guild exists by Admiral Merlwyb's own order, to keep the art alive. You meet the Admiral in step 19, Feint and Strike.

Glory Days

Side quest, level 4

S'dhodjbi wants to treat Baderon to aurelia umbrellas, slimy parts of creatures he ate in his old days. She misread his drunken talk: he hates them. She says Baderon once found her passed out, took her in and helped her drink less.

Baderon's sellsword past, through a gift that backfires.

The kidnappings

A Thousand Words

Map quest, level 2

Latisha is proud of the Bismarck's fine food and service, so being cheated hurts twice as much. Latisha asks you to take R'sushmo's drawing of the man to the Yellowjackets (the city guard).

A comic Yellowjacket case for Latisha of the Bismarck (from Duty Calls).

Lost and Found

Map quest, level 2

Ginnade has made a list of missing people from citizens' reports and asks you to take it to N'delika, a colleague in Bulwark Hall. Ginnade's motto: protect the common folk, and they act as your eyes and ears.

Ginnade's list of missing citizens (likely the kidnappings), then a lighter errand that introduces Sisipu of Back in the Water.

The kidnappings

I Stay the Streetlight

Map quest, level 2

N'tanmo praises you as a model adventurer, then hands you her lamp job. Sisipu reveals that N'tanmo asked her for this work, then passed it to the first adventurer she met. N'tanmo often pushes her duties onto new adventurers.

There is more behind Sisipu's grumbling than you see at first. One clue is her own quest, Back in the Water. Since the Calamity, she has been stuck on land. She is eager to go to sea again.

The kidnappings

The Rats in the Wharf

Map quest, level 3

H'naanza tells you Baderon is offering a reward to anyone who kills at least five wharf rats. Plenty of them lurk outside the Tempest Gate, so H'naanza urges you to hurry and take the chance.

A strange bounty; meet H'naanza, who sends you to the Drydocks in MSQ #13.

A Sheepish Request

Map quest, level 3

H'lahono gets the four slices of lamb just in time. She used to be a chef, but her skills were not good enough. When the Bismarck grew, she asked to be its provisioner (the one who buys supplies), and finds the role fulfilling.

The Bismarck's kitchen, which caters the Admiral's banquet (MSQ #20).

Pirates and the AdmiralTrade and the city

Back in the Water

Map quest, level 3

The Calamity (a great disaster) hit the fishing trade, but fisherfolk are returning to sea, and Sisipu wants to as well. Her guild always orders boats from Naldiq & Vymelli's, now very busy, so she sends you to ask H'naanza about the wait.

Sisipu's boat must wait: the shipyard is busy with the warship Victory (MSQ #13).

After the CalamityTrade and the city

Licensed to Reave

Map quest, level 2

Mordyn offers you paid work with the crew and sends you up the steps to the balcony to meet Carvallain, their captain. Do right by Carvallain, Mordyn says, and the captain does right by you.

Meet the Kraken's Arms, pirates licensed to raid Garlean ships.

Summerford Farms and the farmhands

From the city to the farms: Summerford's ex-pirates, Moraby Bay's farms and kobolds whose hoarded crystals point to Titan. Plants the first threads: the tattooed men spying on the farm and Sevrin's betrayal lead to the Serpent Reavers.

SummaryAnalysis

On to Summerford

Main story #2, level 4

Staelwyrn, the farm's owner, is Baderon's old mate. He runs it with mostly reformed pirates, trying to bring life back to soil the Calamity ruined. Baderon gave you a glowing recommendation and tells you to work hard and impress 'the old bastard'.

Keep in mind that Staelwyrn's farm workers are his old pirate crew. They feel pulled back toward piracy. The whole Summerford chapter, steps 3–9, is built around this.

Pirates and the AdmiralAfter the CalamityBeast tribes and primals

The Time Is Ripe

Side quest, level 6

Bhirdraeg is delighted with the sweet oranges and pays you partly in goods, including 10 Orange Juice. He wishes scurvy (a sickness fresh fruit prevents) on the ex-pirates he finds lazy, and mocks the Admiral: you can't teach an old sea dog new tricks.

Summerford's cash crop, picked by you because the ex-pirates won't; the same oranges go astray in MSQ #6 Double Dealing.

Pirates and the AdmiralTrade and the city

Orange Crush

Side quest, level 7

Because puks eat the bees, his workers must pollinate every orange by hand. With the hatchlings gone, the bees can work. Bhirdraeg still calls the ex-pirates the real pests, 'whelps-out-of-water' (like fish out of water), and wishes you could rid him of them too.

The Encyclopaedia Eorzea says puks are also called 'wind dragons'. But these fierce little creatures have no proven link to any real kind of dragon.

Pirates and the Admiral

Fool Me Once

Side quest, level 4

Niniya says the key lesson for new adventurers is to question everyone's motives. Niniya sends you to Ancreta at the Eyes for work, but it is a second prank, after the quest Making a Name: Ancreta cannot hire you directly.

From Niniya's second prank to a strike on the kobolds in the Blind Iron Mines; their hoarded crystals point to Titan. Branch: Kobolds Ahoy.

Beast tribes and primals

Cry Me a Liver

Side quest, level 5

Ancreta asks you to slay rivertoads for the livers. She cannot leave her post, and the sight of them turns her stomach, so you deliver them too. Her grandfather says she has been dainty since she was little.

Listen for a quick, passing mention of the 'New Worlders'. They come from a far land across the sea. For a long time, the game names that land only in passing. Remember it.

Beast tribes and primals

Wool's Errand

Side quest, level 6

Anaoc grumbles that the courier who usually takes the wool is lazing in bed. He asks you to bring the sack of fleece to Weitzaren, the miller up north who turns the Stead's wool into felt (thick pressed cloth).

The sightseeing log says the Grey Fleet's mills use the steady winds of the Strait of Merlthor. The winds help them grind wheat and full (clean and thicken) the region's wool.

Beast tribes and primals

Flour Power

Side quest, level 8

Weitzaren, high miller of the Grey Fleet, loves grain even more than felting wool, and makes many mill puns. He has you slay the galagos and take the flour to Skarnmhar at the Stead. His name means "Wheat Harvest" in the old Roegadyn language.

Skarnmhar worries that the Stead has no guards of its own. This sets up what comes next: the kobolds are coming.

Beast tribes and primals

Kobolds and Indigents

Side quest, level 9

Skarnmhar sends you to help the coachman, Wahoy Mahoy, who is plucky but alone. When you bring back three bags of clothes, Skarnmhar fears the restless kobolds are not done. He says war is at their doorstep and tells you to inform Anaoc.

Skarnmhar's warning is the turning point of the kobold chain. From here on, it is open conflict. It breaks out in the next quest, Bait and Swat.

Beast tribes and primals

Bait and Swat

Side quest, level 9

Anaoc explains an old pact: the sea for Limsa, the underground for the kobolds. He says a pact means nothing if it ruins them, so they must strike first. He likes Arenlona's bait plan, then asks you to seek Baderon's help getting Yellowjacket guards.

Remember the name Titan. The kobolds are storing up crystals to summon this god. Baderon warns that defenses will matter little if it wakes. For now, the story says no more about this threat.

Beast tribes and primalsThe Arcanist’s art

What Goes Around

Map quest, level 7

Loetrswys proudly says the mill never stops, so neither can its millers. Loetrswys asks you to hear the other three millers' worries and report to Weitzaren. The name Loetrswys means "Pure Sister" in the old Roegadyn language.

Weitzaren worries about a sail with a small cut. But Waentzirn names the real threat: 'grubby scavengers' who steal what the mill makes. Remember this when trouble comes back.

Beast tribes and primals

Kobolds Ahoy

Side quest, level 8

Loetrswys complains that Weitzaren calls the kobold crimes mere mischief and cares more for his mills than his workers. Her beloved is Moegramm, who works at the Stead and calls her his "little lamb". She is sure he misses her.

Staelwyrn does not worry much about the kobolds because the Sahagin worry him more. Remember that during his main-story quests at Summerford Farms (MSQ #3-#9).

Beast tribes and primals

Soothing the Savage Siren

Map quest, level 4

O'kalkaya tells you to kneel to the captain, who is in a foul mood and bad with customers. After your visit, O'kalkaya hears her cackle and thanks you: her rages cost the crew deckhands. O'kalkaya trusts Rhoswen to work within the Admiral's rules.

The Sanguine Sirens lose their prizes to the Kraken's Arms (Licensed to Reave).

Pirates and the Admiral

Dressed to Call

Main story #3, level 5

Staelwyrn warns the ex-pirates here are still rogues who respect strength. Once your gear passes, he has work for you. In small talk, he says he captained a pirate ship until the Calamity (a great disaster), then dragged his unwilling crew here.

Staelwyrn's pirates 'traded in their cutlasses for coulters' (plough blades). This is the old saying 'swords into ploughshares'. Step 8, Plowshares to Swords, turns it around.

Pirates and the AdmiralAfter the Calamity

Rocks in a Hard Place

Map quest, level 5

Grynewyda explains the farm is paid well under the Admiral's settlement plan, but loses the grant if the land is not cleared. The ex-pirates who work under Grynewyda laze about. After you clear the rocks, Grynewyda wishes they were half as hard-working as you.

The Admiral's settlement initiative at work; Grynewyda returns in MSQ #9.

Pirates and the Admiral

Moegramm Had a Little Lamb

Map quest, level 5

Moegramm is the Stead shepherd. He cares for all three kinds of livestock, but sheep are his first love. He sends you to Chartain, then praises your work and speaks very tenderly of caring for sheep. His name means "Able Ram" in old Roegadyn.

Farm comedy at the Red Rooster Stead, the farm the kobold chain later defends; Moegramm's warning starts Kobolds Ahoy.

Beast tribes and primals

Much Ado About Dodos

Map quest, level 6

Moegramm loves his dodos for their sweet eggs and tasty meat, once the poison glands are removed. He sends you to X'payan. When you bring the birds back, he calls them his babies, then asks you to watch them until they are ripe for slaughter.

The X before X'payan's given name shows her original tribe. It is the tribe of the Lynx, among the Seekers of the Sun. The X is said like 'She'.

Beast tribes and primals

What's in the Box

Arcanist quest, level 5

Thubyrgeim reminds her arcanists to eat. Her guild inspects cargo at Mealvaan's Gate, so she sets you a practice cargo check. She calls K'lyhia odd but the guild's best tactician, and hopes you can widen K'lyhia's view beyond arcanima.

Note K'lyhia's worn-out starter grimoire, which Thubyrgeim points out. It was a gift from the absent guildmaster. That book is the key to the rest of the Arcanist story.

Where the Heart Is (Mist)

Feature quest, level 5

Ahctkoen hears from you that only adventurers may buy plots in Mist, to draw them to Limsa Lominsa. He is disappointed, but understands the city needs adventurers in these hard times. He puts his dream of a home on hold and stays hopeful.

Lurkers in the Grotto

Main story #4, level 5

Staelwyrn worries his ex-pirate farmhands may be tempted back to piracy. He agrees the knife points to pirates. He vouches for Y'shtola, who often studies aether (magic energy) near Summerford. He thanks you. His name means 'Still Snake' in old Roegadyn.

The 'Cultured Conjurer' with the strange machine is Y'shtola. Y'shtola comes back at steps 9, 19, 21 and 28. Note how she reacts when you mention a 'towering crystal'.

Pirates and the AdmiralThe Arcanist’s art

Yarzon, Yarzoff

Side quest, level 7

Ostfyr is pained that travelers reach his gates hurt by yarzons at the Rogue River, but needs every man to hold the garrison. The Maelstrom's fleet is spread too thin, so Yellowjackets hold La Thagran. His name means 'East Fire' in old Roegadyn.

The La Thagran Checkpoint of MSQ #6; Ostfyr returns in Kobolds Ahoy.

Pirates and the AdmiralBeast tribes and primals

Washed Up

Main story #5, level 7

Staelwyrn asks you to round up his slacking farmhands instead of doing their work, so they learn. All return except Sevrin, who has slipped away from him countless times. He does not blame you and vows to put Sevrin in the dirt.

Watch Sevrin, the one farm worker who won't come back to work. His secrets drive Double Dealing, Plowshares to Swords and Just Deserts (steps 6, 8 and 9).

Pirates and the Admiral

Whack-a-Mole

Map quest, level 7

Arenlona spent years breeding ogre pumpkins that resist fire, drought, frost, pests and festive rituals, yet moles still steal them. She decides to keep seeking complex solutions and have you do the killing. Her name means 'Harvest Gatherer' in old Roegadyn.

Arenlona's odd experiments at the pumpkin farm; she returns to plan the kobold ambush in Bait and Swat.

Beast tribes and primals

Beetle Juice

Map quest, level 8

Arenlona reasons that aphids fear ladybugs, so the scent of ladybug blood on crops keeps aphids away; she calls this manipulating nature. She admits living ladybugs already protect the crops, but sees no science in that.

The item text of the viscera describes a 'moss-green ooze'. It leaks from the cracked shell 'after crushing an innocent, defenseless ladybug'.

Beast tribes and primals

Double Dealing

Main story #6, level 8

Staelwyrn has long known Sevrin makes shady deals with goblins behind his back. He gets his full payment through you and admits he had hoped for more from Sevrin. He could overlook skimming, but not selling everyone out to goblins. He warns you about Sevrin.

Goblins are said to go on a great pilgrimage once every hundred years. They seemed to vanish from Eorzea for a long time. They came back only in the last five years.

Pirates and the Admiral

A Pound of Cure

Side quest, level 8

Khanmhar says the ex-pirates have been away from the sea too long and turn to fighting to ease their broken hearts. A full supply of medicine barely lasts a week, so Khanmhar asks you to buy a hi-potion for Wydaloef.

The ex-pirates' brawls, and Tiller's Rest, the outpost of MSQ #7-#8.

Pirates and the Admiral

Fire and Brimstone

Map quest, level 8

Some miners shrug off the gas, but Broenruht writes the letters home when one chokes to death. Since the Calamity, a disaster five years ago, metal prices are high enough to make them rich or dead. Broenruht means 'Brown Smoke' in old Roegadyn.

Meet Broenruht and the Blind Iron Mines, later the kobolds' hideout.

After the CalamityBeast tribes and primalsTrade and the city

Loam Maintenance

Main story #7, level 9

Gurcant sends you to Rhotwyda in the orchard, sure she knows where blackloam is found. Neither of them tells you where it comes from. His idle line says he has fifty years of farming behind him.

The Cookpot is a patch of land with a strange wall of stone around it. That is why the locals started calling it the Cookpot.

Pirates and the Admiral

Plowshares to Swords

Main story #8, level 9

Pfrewahl has sworn to Staelwyrn that he fights no more, so he sends you to get the tools back. He says he saw Sevrin meeting the pirates in secret and wants Staelwyrn told. His name means "Joy Eel" in old Roegadyn.

Remember 'Reavers', the name the journal gives the tool thieves early on. They are found out in Just Deserts (step 9). They strike in Feint and Strike (step 19).

Pirates and the Admiral

Just Deserts

Main story #9, level 9

Staelwyrn cannot cut Sevrin loose; the young man reminds him of his younger self. He praises Sevrin's choice to save his mates, keeps a place for him at the farm, and thanks you. He asks you to tell Baderon, whom the Yellowjackets heed.

The Masked Magus calls up the golem, crying 'Surrender to the Darkness!'. Then he escapes. He is back in Feint and Strike (step 19), where Y'shtola gives the name of his kind.

The Skylift and Swiftperch

Rebuilding after the Calamity: the swamped Skylift, and Swiftperch, the village the Serpent Reavers attack in Ch. 6.

SummaryAnalysis

Sky-high

Main story #10, level 10

Baderon points you to the Skylift in middle La Noscea, a big scaffold on the cliff called the Descent, used to haul cargo. He hears the workers need help with odd jobs, and sends you to its head, Wyrkrhit.

The Descent swallowed a river, the Nym, along with the land it flowed through and countless lives. It got its scary name so no one else would fall over the edge.

Pirates and the AdmiralAfter the CalamityTrade and the city

Keeping It Fresh

Side quest, level 10

Kazai Buoyzai sends you for three water sprite cores to chill his fish, then checks you know he does not mean "dance" literally. Pleased, he explains that the Skylift's delivery companies compete hard: one slip, and a rival steals your business.

Rival haulers at the Skylift keep food moving after the Calamity, seen from a fish trader's side.

After the CalamityTrade and the city

Baiting Buzzards

Side quest, level 10

Kazai Buoyzai has you lure the buzzards with rotting rat meat and kill them. He makes most of his money hauling food, and says without you he would be sleeping in the gutter. He blames the Calamity, a great disaster, for the starving scavengers.

The buzzards are another after-effect of the Calamity. Food has become so hard to find that even scavengers now dare to raid wagons on the road.

After the CalamityTrade and the city

Tactical Planning

Arcanist quest, level 10

Thubyrgeim has you slay three roselings and three wild jackals, calling three the perfect sample size, then sends you with K'lyhia. Pleased, she allows you to train at other guilds, but advises mastering arcanima first. Off duty, the twenty-nine-year-old teaches children to read.

Why do mages chase goblin smugglers? Limsa's arcanists also check and value cargo at Mealvaan's Gate, the city's customs. K'lyhia's rank there is 'foreseer'.

Pirates and the AdmiralTrade and the cityThe Arcanist’s art

Out to Dry

Map quest, level 10

W'dhovaka swears by Llymlaen, Limsa's guardian goddess of navigation, and has to explain the ripped leather is not her trousers. Fewer balloons mean less cargo lifted. After you kill five crabs, she wants a more lasting fix, as loads keep growing.

A close-up of the Skylift cargo crunch of MSQ #10-#11.

Trade and the city

Thanks a Million

Main story #11, level 11

Wyrkrhit calls the driver gutless for dumping a millioncorn seedling when a monster sprang from it. He sends you to recover it and take it to Lyulf at Swiftperch, and lets you keep whatever Lyulf pays, since the plant may hide more danger.

Millioncorn's item text calls it 'native to the recently discovered New World'. This is like how corn came to Europe from the Americas. The story sails there much later.

Pirates and the AdmiralAfter the Calamity

Need to Breed

Side quest, level 12

Lyulf's late father bred the dodos here; they escaped in the Calamity and went wild. To rebuild Swiftperch as it was in his father's time, Lyulf starts raising dodos from eggs, and must remove their poison-breath gland. He dreams of golden wheat fields.

Swiftperch's recovery plan, begun with the millioncorn of MSQ #11.

Pirates and the AdmiralAfter the Calamity

A Bridge Too Full

Map quest, level 11

Doesrael is annoyed that the guard Wyrstmaga has left his post, and sends you to fetch him. Once Wyrstmaga is back, Doesrael praises your silver tongue but calls Wyrstmaga a delicate flower who must harden up. His name means "Two Doe" in old Roegadyn.

The Victory's supply line (MSQ #13-#18); the bridge returns in Pincer Maneuver.

Relighting the Torch

Main story #12, level 11

Fraeloef sends you to check on Khanswys, the lighthouse keeper. When he hears the furnace is damaged, he writes reports and sends you to Forgemaster H'naanza in Limsa Lominsa for quick repairs. His name means "Free Leaf" in old Roegadyn.

The journal ends with a question. Why did a furnace that was fixed barely a week earlier fail? No later quest in this chart answers it. But trouble returns to Swiftperch in step 19.

Pirates and the AdmiralAfter the Calamity
IV

Moraby Drydocks and the warship Victory

The warship Victory, a symbol of Limsa's rebirth, and the pirate plot to sabotage it; a coded missive leads on.

SummaryAnalysis

On to the Drydocks

Main story #13, level 11

H'naanza sends you with a letter to Ahtbyrm, the head shipwright at the Moraby Drydocks. Her guild forges the ship's parts, while the building happens at the docks. She sees passing on the armorer's skills as her "Builder-given duty".

Before the Calamity, only the Armorers' Guild could build at the Drydocks. This was to stop sabotage. Now they are short of workers, so they hire ex-pirates too. Remember this when the Victory is in danger (step 17).

Pirates and the AdmiralAfter the Calamity

Without a Doubt

Main story #14, level 12

Fyrilsmyd was never late in twelve months. Ahtbyrm doubts Haldbroda at Candlekeep Quay, who claims he never saw Fyrilsmyd. Ahtbyrm cannot leave his post, so he sends you to threaten Haldbroda with a move to lonely Turtleback Island.

In idle talk, Haldbroda explains the ferries from Candlekeep Quay. They are the main way to travel by water between island ports like Limsa Lominsa and Aleport.

Pirates and the Admiral

Failure to Lunch

Map quest, level 12

Wafufu gets very anxious. She must stay with her cart, so you search for the lunches. She fears the hungry foreman Ahtbyrm might eat her, and is relieved when all four return. The journal says this would almost surely never have happened.

The workers behind the warship Victory; the lumber count shows Limsa may need Gridania's wood, and the story soon sends you there (MSQ #22).

What Counts

Map quest, level 12

Yulgi Honalgi teases you about your counting skills. The numbers you bring are grim. He says they are still far from healing after the Calamity, a disaster five years ago. As a proud Lominsan, he hates to say they may need wood from Gridania.

Oakwood is a forest by Bronze Lake. Most of it burned in the Calamity, and the rest was cut down for the Victory. So five years later, the Drydocks are still short of wood.

After the Calamity

Nailed It

Map quest, level 13

Hezzkhezl heats rivets with the white-hot cores of lightning sprites, a kind of monster, and needs more. Delighted when you bring three, he can head to the alehouse. He credits foreman Ahtbyrm with the idea. His name means "Hot Kettle" in old Roegadyn.

Sailors here swear by 'Leviathan's eye'. Also, 'fishback' is Lominsan slang for a Sahagin. Keep both names in mind, because they matter in La Noscea's main story.

Righting the Shipwright

Main story #15, level 12

Haldbroda tells you to stop questioning his character and help search the Salt Strand for survivors of the wreck. He suggests Fyrilsmyd may be among them. His name means "Kind Brother" in old Roegadyn, though he is unfriendly to you.

Remember Ahtbyrm's guess that Sahagin magic caused the wreck on a calm day. Their part in Limsa's troubles is fully revealed in Feint and Strike (step 19).

Pirates and the Admiral

Do Angry Pirates Dream

Main story #16, level 13

Ahtbyrm admits he doubted you at first. He still does not like you, but he trusts you, and recommends you to Ghimthota. It sickens him that some would betray Limsa Lominsa for a few coins after all it has suffered.

Remember the 'boy' the pirates talk about. The journal leaves the question open. The very next quest, Victory in Peril (step 17), answers it.

Pirates and the AdmiralTrade and the city

Forbidden Island

Map quest, level 13

A'zumyn wants the foreign pest destroyed before it breeds and harms local animals. The pests are Thavnairian mites, seen before only in Radz-at-Han cargo reaching Limsa Lominsa. A'zumyn suspects pirates smuggled them in, and wants to dig deeper. The name's 'A' marks the Antelope tribe.

Pirates smuggle foreign pests, like the coeurls of Like Cats and Dogs.

Pirates and the AdmiralTrade and the city

Constant Carvings

Map quest, level 13

Mimidoa is very forgetful: he cannot recall Rostnzeh's name and does not recognize you when you return. He once served on the Cloud Dancer, and was a cannonboy for Captain Mistbeard. He thinks women's company would cure Rostnzeh's loneliness, and plans to send some.

Meet lonely Rostnzeh; his story goes on in Say It with Flowers.

Say It with Flowers

Map quest, level 13

Rostnzeh feels close to madness and loves Ghimthota. He first saw her on patrol, but was too afraid to meet her eyes. Since becoming head watch, she no longer climbs up. He sends you to tell her, with a La Noscean lilybell flower.

Rostnzeh's crush on Ghimthota, head of the Drydocks watch (MSQ #16-#18).

Victory in Peril

Main story #17, level 14

Ghimthota sends you to fight the pirates while she tends a wounded soldier. She calls the Victory the hope of Limsa Lominsa. She admits security must improve, hopes finishing the ship can heal Ahtbyrm, mentions a strange object they found, and asks another favor.

The Mamool Ja hired here are a tough race from the lands to the west. Their 'skill at arms is their primary export'. They fight for pay, as hired swords.

Pirates and the Admiral

Men of the Blue Tattoos

Main story #18, level 14

The letter is in a strange script no one around her can read, and the Maelstrom wants to know its secrets. Ghimthota has heard the Yellowjackets turn to Baderon's "connections," so she trusts you to hand it to Baderon alone.

Ghimthota stops to wonder about Baderon's handy connections. Baderon reads the code himself. He has a past, and part of it is told in Feint and Strike (step 19).

Swiftperch and the Admiral's banquet

The Limsa climax: the Reavers' real target is Swiftperch, and the banquet reveals Leviathan and makes you the Admiral's envoy.

SummaryAnalysis

Feint and Strike

Main story #19, level 14

Baderon was once a sellsword, a fighter for hire, and learned to read the script of the Sahagin, the "fishbacks," from orders taken off dead foes. He sees the Victory attack was a decoy, guesses Swiftperch is the real target, and sends you to Reyner.

This is easy to miss. Ryssfloh's regards 'to the Scions' are the first mention of the Scions of the Seventh Dawn. This chart ends with that group (step 29).

High Society

Main story #20, level 14

Reyner says few get this honor, not even the Admiral's officers, but you earned it. He sends you to Baderon for proper clothes. He was never a pirate; he began as an officer under his teacher, Commodore Sthalmann. He cares for an old cat.

Reyner never sailed under a pirate flag. He began his career as an officer under his teacher, Commodore Sthalmann of the Barracudas.

Main story #21, level 14

Baderon tells you to wear the shoes and hold your head high. He described you to Zanthael only by your shoes. When you collapse at the banquet, he drags you back to the Wench, blames too much cake, and says the Admiral wants a word.

The Carteneau vision shows Raubahn and Kan-E-Senna. You meet them next, as envoy (step 22). It also shows Louisoix, named by Y'shtola in step 9. Note the '???' voice.

Good for What Ales You

Side quest, level 14

Dodozan keeps his client secret and avoids the Maelstrom and Yellowjackets, though the ale was for the Bloody Executioners, a pirate crew. He comes from Ul'dah and trades with anyone who pays, pirates or princes. He is relieved to get his payment.

The Bloody Executioners pay their debts: Limsa's pirates up close.

The Lominsan Envoy

Main story #22, level 15

Merlwyb proposes memorial services in each city-state on the fifth anniversary of the Battle of Carteneau. She makes you her personal envoy to Gridania and Ul'dah and gives you an airship pass. She says you have a quality that recalls history's champions.

Three names from the imperial cutscene come back later. One is Gaius van Baelsar, legatus of the XIVth Legion. The others are Nero tol Scaeva and the 'Garlond' Nero mumbles about.

Topaz Teachings

Arcanist quest, level 15

Thubyrgeim notices you look tired and asks if you sleep properly, since reasoning suffers without rest. Each of her lessons starts with such a health check. She teaches you to summon Topaz Carbuncle, a magic ally, for use if the inspection turns sour.

Summon Topaz, the action taught here, is a newer skill. It came in patch 6.0 (2021-12-07) and replaced the old Summon II.

Over the Rails

Arcanist quest, level 15

Thubyrgeim says the mercenaries are old hands at guarding K'lyhia. She tells you the captain was the pirate Doesmaga, exiled years ago, who has hurt K'lyhia before. She regrets sending her and urges you to turn your anger into training.

Remember the Morningstar's captain, the exiled pirate Doesmaga. This pirate has hurt K'lyhia before. The Arcanist story builds up to Sinking Doesmaga (Lv 30).

Skribyld believes the coeurls were smuggled into Vylbrand and sends you after the merchant R'kontai. Skribyld blames her greed, says she must answer for it, and has a plan to end the beasts' fighting. The name means "Write Make" in Roegadyn.

Curiosity Killed the Coeurl

Map quest, level 15

Skribyld sadly orders the last coeurls killed, putting people's safety first. Hearing that only an orphaned kitten is left, Skribyld is saddened, reports some pirates were caught, and, since the Yellowjackets cannot raise a coeurl, leaves the kitten in your care.

Skribyld fears the coeurls could start breeding, and it has happened before. Wild coeurls come from escaped war beasts. They were trained on the Pearl, an island at the mouth of the Rothlyt Sound.

Skribyld offers R'kontai a lighter sentence, not freedom, for her help. He is glad the pup is safe. Pirates tied to his case are now caught, though the ringleader is still free. With no room at headquarters, he asks you to keep the pup.

Quarterstone is the pup's hiding place. One part in four of its soil is rock. Yet it once had many grain stores and much golden wheat. That was partly thanks to the hard work of the people who lived there before.

The envoy's tour and the Scions

The envoy's tour takes you beyond Limsa: three dungeon quests, at Sastasha, in Gridania and in Ul'dah. The payoff: the Scions of the Seventh Dawn, who have noticed your deeds, open the wider story of the primals.

SummaryAnalysis

Call of the Sea

Main story #23, level 15

Bartholomew once went with the Flame General on an official visit to Limsa Lominsa, where he met Baderon. Baderon has a job for a capable adventurer, and Bartholomew says no one has better credentials than you.

The reward's item text points to an old translation mistake. Word for word, the item's Japanese name, フェニックスの尾, means 'Phoenix Tail', not 'Phoenix Down'.

Keep Your Day Job

Side quest, level 15

S'nairoh talks herself through arming the cannon while you fight; her partner C'mell is missing. The 'enemy' is only newborn puks, flying beasts that never threatened Aleport. She is let down: she joined the Maelstrom to fight, not to break up brawls.

Comic relief at Aleport's garrison that introduces Commander Falkbryda of Camp Skull Valley.

Pirates and the AdmiralBeast tribes and primals

Mountains out of Molehills

Side quest, level 15

S'nairoh mistakes harmless hedgemoles for an attack of adamantoises (giant tortoises) and must stand down again. She hopes to become an officer, but fears losing pay she spends on ale. Blaming too much ale-fed blood, she rushes off to be treated with leeches.

S'nairoh's 'storm private, second class' is a real Maelstrom rank. If you join the Maelstrom later in the main story, you start one rank below her. You start as Storm Private Third Class.

Walk of Shame

Side quest, level 15

S'nairoh asks you to carry her report to Commander Falkbryda at Camp Skull Valley. Too weak from leechings to go, she fears jail. Falkbryda says S'nairoh was once among the first promoted, but slipped at Aleport. Her pay is cut, without formal blame.

Remember Commander Falkbryda. She returns in the level 50 main story of patch 2.2, The Sea Rises. Once again, she is at Camp Skull Valley.

Nest We Forget

Side quest, level 16

Dodos nest even inside the barracks, and she wants the nest gone before it draws dangerous beasts. She praises your speed. The camp guards against the kobolds of O'Ghomoro to the north; kobold skulls once lined the valley floor, giving its name.

Falkbryda has more planned for you. She pays you at the end of Scythe Extra Large. She also gives the chart's last Aleport quest, I Hereby Relieve You.

On a Wing and a Prayer

Ahldfoet wants exactly five dusk bat wings as a lucky charm, kept secret from his superstitious crew. As a boy, trapped atop an old watchtower, he lived two weeks on three bats and ate one wing. He carries five wings on every voyage.

Mummy Dearest

Side quest, level 15

Ahldfoet promised a mother he met at a port to get her letter to her daughter, Wiltswys, at Camp Skull Valley. He speaks warmly of her tearful, tawny eyes and seems taken with her. He jokes that on land he is 'at sea'.

Wiltswys is amazed at herself. As a girl, she didn't have two leather soles to slap together. She was too poor for shoes. Who would have thought she would make a fair quartermaster?

Pirates and the AdmiralBeast tribes and primals

Toxic Avenger

Side quest, level 16

Pleased you filled the vials, Wiltswys warms to you. The camp's foe is now the Sahagin, fish-like beastmen weak to poison, who destroyed the Halfstone settlement. With no home but this valley and no family but the Maelstrom, she fights for both.

Leviathan is the primal behind the Sahagin. The Serpent Reavers serve the same primal. The Admiral explains this in MSQ #21 A Mizzenmast Repast.

Flowers for Aerghaemr

Side quest, level 16

Alyrloef finds Roehanth's visits to the crypt morbid, since he mourns people he never knew. He jokes about hitting him with the crypt's stone hourglass, then fears he insulted Althyk, god of time. He sends flowers to make peace with the gods.

Halfstone's fall, hinted at in Toxic Avenger, is told here. The farmer Aerghaemr gave away his boots and protected the others as they pulled back. The former pirate Roehanth tries to be like him.

Pirates and the AdmiralBeast tribes and primals

Scythe Extra Large

Side quest, level 16

Roehanth asks you to slay the last four mantises, since he wants no deaths near Aerghaemr's grave. Then he heads back to the gate for the cannon test, worried Alyrloef might blow himself up alone. Falkbryda praises his quick thinking.

Remember that Falkbryda is now interested in using adventurers. This interest leads straight into her next quest for you, I Hereby Relieve You.

I Hereby Relieve You

Side quest, level 16

She has a dispatch from Commodore Reyner: an adventurer is taking over the Sastasha Seagrot work, and it is you. She is happy to pull her men out, since forces are spread too thin. She sends you to relieve Catguistl.

Catguistl calls the Seagrot 'labyrinthine', like a maze, four times in one short talk. He says it once more in his idle line. He insists that only pure willpower kept him alive.

My Brother's Not a Keeper

Side quest, level 16

She sends a bottle of lowland wine to each of the two tidegate captains, as a small quartermaster's treat. The tidegates guard narrow channels against the Sahagin. She admits the captains are brothers who bicker almost all the time.

The brothers' long fight goes on after this quest. At level 48 it returns in Sibling Rivalry, a fitting name. There, two 'perfectly equal' sets of food rations still start an argument.

Pirates and the AdmiralBeast tribes and primals

Feature quest, level 15

She says the Slasher carries blades long enough to gut a whale, though no one has seen any blood. Impressed that you are not scared, she asks you to look into a scream she just heard outside.

Rising to the Challenge

Feature quest, level 15

She found a well-worn journal left by a first-time customer, a stranger who loved his drink. She sends you to the regular Quentenain, who drank with him. She would offer you a free drink, but Baderon docked her wages last time.

Call of the Forest

Main story #25, level 15

He admits he knows nothing more about the task, but trusts you after the chaos in Sastasha. He sends you to Mother Miounne, his counterpart in Gridania. Miounne calls him a "foul-mouthed rogue."

Limsans swear by the Navigator, Llymlaen. Miounne says 'The Matron be praised!', and the Matron is Nophica. Nophica is Gridania's guardian goddess. In myth, Nophica is also Llymlaen's younger sister.

Fire in the Gloom

Main story #26, level 16

She describes the Tam–Tara Deepcroft, a Gelmorran settlement where Gridanians bury their dead. Afterward, she passes on Lewin's thanks. She says adventurer deaths are rising as untrained people take on too much, as one broken party shows. She then offers a job from Ul'dah.

Paiyo Reiyo leaves here in anger. Later, a letter comes from his old companion Edda, a conjurer. It invites him to her wedding to her dead fiancé, Avere.

Call of the Desert

Main story #27, level 16

She sends you to Momodi, who runs the Quicksand in Ul'dah, and calls her the sultanate's version of herself. She expects Momodi to send you into danger, but trusts you to come through unhurt.

Look at Momodi's hairpin. The official lore book says it reminds her of a young man. She only meant to encourage him, but she pushed him so hard that his future changed forever.

Into a Copper Hell

Main story #28, level 17

She recalls a news article about the mines reopening, and guesses the miners dug too deep. When you return, she is glad you are safe. She never wanted to run the guild, but now feels privileged. She warns the Scions are no ordinary folk.

Remember what Edda says as she leaves: 'I shan't forget'. She leaves to start over as an adventurer. Her story goes on past the end of this chart.

An Ill-conceived Venture

Feature quest, level 17

This adventurer sent his retainer out with poor gear and fears he was eaten. He asks you to tell the local watch if you find remains. The retainer is alive, calls him an oaf, and makes him buy the first round.

The Scions of the Seventh Dawn

Main story #29, level 17

She jokes that adventurers always pick the door marked death. She vouches that the Scions are good people tackling Eorzea's worst problems. She swears you to secrecy, sends you to the Waking Sands in Vesper Bay, and asks you to visit old helpers sometimes.
