Scythe Extra Large

Quest giver Roehanth in Western La Noscea

Summary and analysis

SummaryAnalysis

Roehanth asks you to slay the last four mantises, since he wants no deaths near Aerghaemr's grave. Then he heads back to the gate for the cannon test, worried Alyrloef might blow himself up alone. Falkbryda praises his quick thinking.

What happens, step by step

  1. Sergeant Roehanth has the cross-eyed look of a man threading a needle, and none can doubt that you are the stitch in time that saves nine.
  2. Killer mantises have spawned near the Founder's Crypt, and despite the Maelstrom's best efforts, several still roam free. You are bid to slay the remaining four.
  3. The last of the mantises are dead. One hopes they did not leave an egg sac or two behind. Make your report to Sergeant Roehanth.
  4. The dead may sleep without hearing the scrape of gristly scythe. Sergeant Roehanth is pleased. This task being Maelstrom business, you must take yourself to Commander Falkbryda at Camp Skull Valley for your pay.
  5. You report the destruction of the mantises to Commander Falkbryda, who appears to see new value in having an adventurer undertake such missions. A job well done is often a prelude to another.

Worth knowing

Easter egg

The journal opens with the saying 'a stitch in time saves nine'. It means a small fix now stops bigger trouble later. Here, you are the stitch.

Easter egg

The killer mantis is an old Final Fantasy monster. It is a giant insect with front legs like scythes. It has come back again and again in the series since Final Fantasy II.

Title reference

The title is a pun on 'size extra large' (XL). It swaps size for scythe. The mantises you fight here are giant and have scythes for arms.

Characters

Who they are, and what they do in this quest.

Falkbryda

Commander Falkbryda is at Camp Skull Valley. Her hunting parties have already killed most of a clutch of killer mantises.

Falkbryda knows you well by now and thanks you for the camp. She praises Sergeant Roehanth's quick thinking. She worries that pests and beasts distract them from the war against the Sahagin. She seems to see new value in using adventurers.

Alyrloef

Alyrloef wants Roehanth back at the gate to test the new cannon.

Alyrloef does not appear. Roehanth mentions that Alyrloef set up the new cannon test, and fears he might blow himself to bits without Roehanth there.

Roehanth

Sergeant Roehanth is near the Founder's Crypt. Killer mantises, giant insects with scythe-like arms, still roam nearby after a missed hatching.

Other languages

The game was written in Japanese and rewritten, not just translated, for each language. Here is what the other versions say, next to the English.

Japanese
‘Prayers After the Extermination’
FrenchMantes tueuses
‘Killer Mantises’
GermanErst töten, dann beten
‘First Kill, Then Pray’
English, Roehanth

An adventurer, are ye? Seems a shame for you to come all the way out here without more to show for it. How about a bit of vilekin hunting?

‘You are an adventurer, I take it?’

Roehanth talks like a stiff, old-school officer. 貴公 is an old samurai-era 'you' for equals or juniors. The English gives him an ex-pirate's 'ye'.

English, Roehanth

There's a few killer mantises about on account of a hatching we missed. The commander sent out hunting parties and collected ten and six heads. There's no more'n twenty in a clutch, think you can handle the last four?

‘They pose a danger to the whole cemetery.’

English says hunting parties already killed sixteen; German says the mantises endanger the whole cemetery.

English, Roehanth

‘Let's see, about four should do.’

English reckons exactly four remain of a clutch of twenty; Japanese says about four should be enough.

English, Roehanth

Nasty critters, those killer mantises. I'm sure Aerghaemr wouldn't've wanted anyone dying near his resting place. Good hunting, adventurer.

‘Now peace has finally returned to the cemetery.’

‘Good work, adventurer.’

English wishes you good hunting before the job; German thanks you as if the cemetery were already at peace.

English wishes you good hunting before the job; Japanese thanks you for work already done.

English, Roehanth

‘And visitors need not fear having to get themselves buried here on the spot.’

German is a thank-you after the hunt, with a dark joke about visitors being buried on the spot.

English, Roehanth

Tsk, see the birds fly to their nests/how my shadow grows, it's time I returned to the gate. Alyrloef said we'd be testing a new cannon. Like to blow himself to bits without me about.

‘Don't be startled if you hear the thunder of the cannons!’

‘I must hurry to Alyrloef.’

English jokes Alyrloef might blow himself up without him; German tells you not to be startled by cannon thunder.

English jokes Alyrloef might blow himself up without him; Japanese just says he must hurry to Alyrloef.

English, Roehanth

Tsk, see the birds fly to their nests/how my shadow grows, it's time I returned to the gate. Alyrloef said we'd be testing a new cannon. Like to blow himself to bits without me about.

‘Today target practice with the howitzers is on the programme.’

German: routine target practice with the howitzers, not a test of a new cannon.

English, Roehanth

Tsk, see the birds fly to their nests/how my shadow grows, it's time I returned to the gate. Alyrloef said we'd be testing a new cannon. Like to blow himself to bits without me about.

‘...That's right, the new type of shell was due to be test-fired, as I recall.’

Japanese says a new shell, not a new cannon, and he had simply forgotten; no blow-himself-up joke.

English, Falkbryda

Ah, your name, you've become a familiar face about these parts. What brings you here today? The rest of the killer mantises? Well done, and I must commend Sergeant Roehanth for his quick thinking.

German

Vielen Dank für deine Arbeit im Camp Schädeltal.

‘Many thanks for your work in Camp Skull Valley.’

English credits Roehanth's quick thinking; German thanks you for your work at the camp.

English, Falkbryda

You have the thanks of this camp. Sometimes, I fear that we will lose the war against the Sahagin for having to deal with pests and beasts...

‘The Maelstrom could use more of your kind.’

English fears pests may cost them the Sahagin war; German says the Maelstrom could use more like you.

English, Falkbryda

Japanese

Japanese: she simply rewards you on her subordinate's behalf; no fear of losing the war to pests.
