HezzkhezlLeviathan's eye! Ye really done gone an' fetched me the blinkin' cores! Ahtbyrm'll be right pleased to see that, he will.

More about this quest

LoreAfter the Calamity

In idle talk, Hezzkhezl remembers the Calamity's big wave crashing onto the coast of Limsa. Hezzkhezl also remembers how the Gods' Grip protected the docks from the worst of it.

Easter egg

The rivet-heater's name is a joke of its own. In old Roegadyn, Hezzkhezl means 'Hot Kettle'. That fits a man whose job is heating rivets.

Easter egg

The clever foreman behind the sprite-core trick has a name with a meaning too. Ahtbyrm means 'Eight Tree' in the ancient Roegadyn language.

In-game text

The item text backs up the riveter's method. Blacksmiths and armorers sometimes use these white-hot cores to give heat. They do this when they drive rivets into metal plate.

Title reference

The title 'Nailed It' is slang for a job done perfectly. It suits a quest for a riveter. The riveter's rivets are hammered in, much like nails.

Characters

Who they are, and what they do in this quest.

Ahtbyrm

Ahtbyrm is still leading the work on the Victory at the Moraby Drydocks.

Ahtbyrm does not speak here. Hezzkhezl mentions him as the clever foreman who thought of heating rivets with sprite cores, and says that is likely why he became chief so fast. Ahtbyrm's name means "Eight Tree" in old Roegadyn.

Hezzkhezl

Hezzkhezl is a shipwright of Naldiq & Vymelli's who drives rivets, metal pins joining steel plates, on the Victory. He boasts no one rivets better.

The game was written in Japanese and rewritten, not just translated, for each language. Here is what the other versions say, next to the English.

Japanese
‘The Secret of Riveting’
FrenchDes rivets fulgurants
‘Lightning-Fast Rivets’
GermanHeiße Nieten halten länger
‘Hot Rivets Hold Longer’
English, Hezzkhezl

When it comes to rivetin', ye could search the realm over, but ye won't find none better than Hezzkhezl. Ten score rivets a bell, I drive. Twice that if I'm not in me cups!

‘Me, I take care of fixing the rivets to make sure the ship's iron plates are firmly joined to one another.’

‘Plates that I have riveted are watertight for a thousand years!’

‘To join iron plates tight so they don't leak, you've got to drive in red-hot rivets!’

English boasts "ten score rivets a bell", twice that when sober; French just explains he rivets the ship's iron plates.

English, Hezzkhezl

When it comes to rivetin', ye could search the realm over, but ye won't find none better than Hezzkhezl. Ten score rivets a bell, I drive. Twice that if I'm not in me cups!

‘You're the adventurer Ahtbyrm has taken a liking to, aren't you?’

French opens by noting Ahtbyrm likes you; English opens with a boast that he is the realm's best riveter.

English, Hezzkhezl

The key to drivin' rivets proper-like is how hot ye can get the buggers. The hotter the rivet, the stronger the bond she'll make with the steel plate. Problem bein', was I to heat me rivets in the forge, they'd be cold as a dead whore's crotch by the time I hauled 'em back to the Victory.

‘And my spinning-strike technique naturally has something to do with it too.’

English says forge-heated rivets would go cold on the way; German credits his own spinning-strike technique.

English, Hezzkhezl

Three cores, and I can be done with the day's work and back at the alehouse, where I belong.

‘There's nothing better for fixing rivets.’

‘For heating rivets, those work best.’

English says three cores let him finish work and return to the alehouse; French says nothing beats them for rivets.

English says three cores let him finish work and return to the alehouse; Japanese says they work best for heating rivets.

English, Hezzkhezl

'Twas the foreman what came up with the idea to use cores to heat the rivets. A clever one, that man. Sharper than a fang in a fishback's beak. Probably is why he made chief so quick, like.

‘He is truly a man of great stature. He set out to be a shipwright rather late, yet he rose to chief shipwright in no time.’

‘He's truly admirable, as much for his genius as for his qualities as a person. What's more, though he came to the trade late, it didn't take him long to reach the post he holds now.’

Hezzkhezl says this of Ahtbyrm. It fits a later reveal: his pirate father wanted him in the family trade. The English never says he started late.

Here too, Hezzkhezl says Ahtbyrm came late. The English praises only his cleverness.

'Tis why I use the white-hot cores o' lightnin' sprites...but as ye can see, me supply's runnin' a tad low. If it ain't too much trouble, would ye be so kind as to fetch me some? Ye look as if ye could take on a whole pack o' sprites with one hand tied behind yer arse.
