Forbidden Island

Quest giver A'zumyn in Lower La Noscea

Summary and analysis

SummaryAnalysis

A'zumyn wants the foreign pest destroyed before it breeds and harms local animals. The pests are Thavnairian mites, seen before only in Radz-at-Han cargo reaching Limsa Lominsa. A'zumyn suspects pirates smuggled them in, and wants to dig deeper. The name's 'A' marks the Antelope tribe.

Pirates smuggle foreign pests, like the coeurls of Like Cats and Dogs.

Candlekeep Quay

The trading city (Ch. 1): customs, merchants and guilds whose people return at the Drydocks and the banquet (Ch. 5-6).

Pirates and the AdmiralTrade and the city

What happens, step by step

  1. Mealvaan's Gate field assessor A'zumyn is seeking help to exterminate an unknown pest.
  2. Journey to the northeast of Candlekeep Quay and search for suspicious-looking mounds of earth. Upon one of these mounds, place a lump of fetid dodo flesh and slay anything that crawls forth from the soil.
  3. You have defeated a family of Thavnairian mites. Return to Candlekeep Quay and report your findings to A'zumyn.
  4. Though still lacking hard evidence, A'zumyn believes that the Thavnairian mites may have been introduced to the area by pirates smuggling restricted items into Vylbrand from Radz–at–Han.
Remember this

Keep the name Radz-at-Han in mind. It is a trading city in far-off Thavnair. Here it is named only as the source of the smuggled goods.

In-game textTrade and the city

In idle talk, A'zumyn says the cargo checkers from Mealvaan's Gate don't usually work at Candlekeep Quay. This is because the port mainly handles local cargo.

In-game textTrade and the city

Candlekeep Quay was first built for the Candlekeep based at Oschon's Torch. It is also used to unload goods going to the Moraby Drydocks.

Who they are, and what they do in this quest.

Other languages

The game was written in Japanese and rewritten, not just translated, for each language. Here is what the other versions say, next to the English.

FrenchDe petits touristes indésirables
‘Unwanted Little Tourists’
GermanMonster einführen verboten
‘Importing Monsters Prohibited’
English, A'zumyn

Recently, there have been a number of petitions made by the residents of Candlekeep Quay concerning a species not native to Vylbrand. If this species is indeed alien to the island, it must be located and destroyed immediately, before it is allowed to reproduce and possibly disturb the natural balance found here amongst the area's fauna.

‘The reports I have received say it is a species that is not native to the island of Vylbrand.’

A'zumyn's rolled r's are written into her lines. The English writes her speech plainly.

English, A'zumyn

Thavnairian mites!? We have collected eggs from cargo carried on ships hailing from Radz–at–Han before...but always in Limsa Lominsa.

‘I do wonder how they could have come from a place so far away...’

German

Das ist mir ein Rätsel.

‘That is a mystery to me.’

‘Even so, why would Thavnairian mitelings, of all things, have got into this land...’

French has no earlier egg finds in Limsa Lominsa; she just wonders how they came so far.

German has her simply baffled; English recalls eggs found before on Radz-at-Han ships in Limsa Lominsa.

Japanese has her only wonder how they got here; no mention of eggs found before in Limsa Lominsa.

English, A'zumyn

Unless...the mites did not come from a ship that laid anchor here, but from a different vessel...one with more heinous motives. I believe this will require further investigation. I thank you again for your assistance. Perhaps I may require your services again in the near future.

‘Hmm... The only plausible explanation I see is that pirates carried these critters along with smuggled goods.’

‘Around here, pirates may be landing smuggled goods.’

French says it outright - pirate smugglers; English only hints at a vessel with heinous motives.

Japanese names pirates unloading contraband nearby; English only hints at a sinister vessel.

English, A'zumyn

Unless...the mites did not come from a ship that laid anchor here, but from a different vessel...one with more heinous motives. I believe this will require further investigation. I thank you again for your assistance. Perhaps I may require your services again in the near future.

‘The only explanation is that pirate smugglers have their criminal fingers in the pie.’

German names the culprits - pirate smugglers; English only hints.

Accepting the quest

A'zumyn

Excuse me, adventurer, might I have a moment of your time? Allow me to introduce myself. I am A'zumyn, field assessor for Mealvaan's Gate. My work with the custom house involves the investigation of claims made regarding the unlawful import of restricted items from foreign shores.

A'zumyn

Recently, there have been a number of petitions made by the residents of Candlekeep Quay concerning a species not native to Vylbrand. If this species is indeed alien to the island, it must be located and destroyed immediately, before it is allowed to reproduce and possibly disturb the natural balance found here amongst the area's fauna.

A'zumyn

I would ask that you take this lump of fetid dodo flesh, and place it upon one of the mounds of soil thought to be the nests of the invasive species. The odor should draw forth whatever creatures lurk beneath, leaving them easy targets.

Place fetid dodo flesh on a suspicious mound and slay the creatures that emerge.

Report to A'zumyn at Candlekeep Quay.

A'zumyn

There are no records of ships traveling to or from the tiny island nation making stops here in Candlekeep Quay...nor would they ever need to.

A'zumyn

Unless...the mites did not come from a ship that laid anchor here, but from a different vessel...one with more heinous motives. I believe this will require further investigation. I thank you again for your assistance. Perhaps I may require your services again in the near future.
