Double Dealing

Quest giver Staelwyrn in Middle La Noscea

Summary and analysis

SummaryAnalysis

Staelwyrn has long known Sevrin makes shady deals with goblins behind his back. He gets his full payment through you and admits he had hoped for more from Sevrin. He could overlook skimming, but not selling everyone out to goblins. He warns you about Sevrin.

Summerford Farms and the traitor Sevrin

Plants the first threads: the tattooed men spying on the farm and Sevrin's betrayal lead to the Serpent Reavers.

Pirates and the Admiral

What happens, step by step

  1. Staelwyrn worries his sack of oranges will not reach the La Thagran Checkpoint as planned.
  2. Sevrin has made off with a sack of oranges with the intention of fencing it to goblins. Staelwyrn bids you seek out Sevrin and cast /doubt on his actions, that he might be compelled to do the right thing.
  3. Sevrin openly admits to have taken the oranges for his own purposes, but he is not concerned with being found out at the moment. His deal with the goblins has gone awry, and his partners in crime are in trouble. He asks that you help them out of their jam.
  4. You have saved Sevrin's mates from an unfortunate fate at the hands of the goblin muggers. Inform Sevrin about their well-being, and remind him about the sack of oranges he appropriated.
  5. Sevrin is grateful to you for saving his henchmen, but is not apologetic for the attempted theft or his cowardice. Not wishing to start another fight, however, he grants you leave to take what you came for. Retrieve the sack of oranges.
  6. You have acquired the oranges. See them to their rightful recipient, Ossine at the La Thagran Checkpoint.
  7. Judging by Ossine's reaction, this is not the first time Sevrin has attempted a stunt like this. Return to Summerford Farms and relay to Staelwyrn all that has transpired.
  8. Once again, Staelwyrn is appreciative of your honest efforts. He also bemoans the fact that Sevrin's disloyalty may be beyond repairing. You are duly warned to keep an eye on the delinquent whenever he is around.
Where it leads

Next in the play order: A Pound of Cure. Khanmhar says the ex-pirates have been away from the sea too long and turn to fighting to ease their broken hearts.

Key lines explained

The lines worth a second look, in the order you hear them, and what each one means.

Confront Sevrin and cast /doubt on his actions

SevrinBloody hells! I'm up the strait without a paddle!
Easter egg

Sozai Rarzai's 'my dodo would've been cooked' twists the saying 'my goose is cooked'. Sevrin's 'up the strait without a paddle' is a sea version of 'up the creek'.

SevrinYou save me mates and, by the Navigator, you'll have your sack o' scurvy snacks!
In-game text

Sevrin's 'scurvy snacks' make sense. Bhirdraeg, an idle NPC, says La Noscean oranges are full of nutrients. They are sweet too, and vital for keeping scurvy away.

More about this quest

LoreThe kidnappingsAfter the Calamity

Goblins are said to go on a great pilgrimage once every hundred years. They seemed to vanish from Eorzea for a long time. They came back only in the last five years.

In-game textPirates and the AdmiralBeast tribes and primals

Ossine has an idle line that you hear outside the quest. Maelstrom forces were spread thin to begin with, 'and that was before the Sahagin surge!'

Title reference

Double-dealing means being dishonest. Here it works both ways. Sevrin cheats Staelwyrn. Then the goblins he calls double-dealing cheat Sevrin in turn.

Title referenceTrade and the city

The Japanese title Yokonagashi Giwaku, 'Suspicion of Diversion', names the crime. The word Yokonagashi means selling goods in illegal ways, like Sevrin's oranges.

Characters

Who they are, and what they do in this quest.

Staelwyrn

Staelwyrn fears a sack of oranges meant for the La Thagran Checkpoint is lost: it vanished along with Sevrin.

Staelwyrn has long known Sevrin makes shady deals with goblins behind his back. He gets his full payment through you and admits he had hoped for more from Sevrin. He could overlook skimming, but not selling everyone out to goblins. He warns you about Sevrin.

Bhirdraeg

Bhirdraeg takes no part in this quest; a chart note only recalls something Bhirdraeg says.

In idle talk, Bhirdraeg says La Noscean oranges are full of nutrients, sweet, and vital for keeping scurvy away. That is why Sevrin calls the sack 'scurvy snacks'.

Sevrin

Sevrin has vanished along with a sack of oranges, and Staelwyrn suspects another shady deal with goblins.

Sevrin's deal with the goblins went wrong, and he fled, leaving his mates in trouble. He asks you to rescue them. Then he says a pirate knows no shame, but hands over the oranges because he likes you. He is grateful, but not sorry.

Aylmer

Aylmer is still one of Sevrin's lot on Staelwyrn's farm crew at Summerford Farms.

Aylmer is among Sevrin's mates caught by goblin muggers near a bonfire. After you save them, Aylmer thanks you and blames Sevrin, whose shove kept Aylmer from getting away.

Sozai Rarzai

Sozai Rarzai is still one of Sevrin's lot on Staelwyrn's farm crew at Summerford Farms.

Sozai Rarzai is among Sevrin's mates caught by goblin muggers. Once saved, Sozai Rarzai says 'my dodo would've been cooked', a twist on 'my goose is cooked', meaning doomed, then thinks hungrily of cooked dodo.

Ossine

Ossine works at the La Thagran Checkpoint and is waiting for a scheduled sack of oranges from Summerford Farms.

Ossine is surprised the oranges arrive on time, with none missing, for once. His reaction shows Sevrin has tried this before. Glad the usual bagmen are gone, he gives you Staelwyrn's full payment to deliver.

Other languages

The game was written in Japanese and rewritten, not just translated, for each language. Here is what the other versions say, next to the English.

Japanese
‘Suspicion of Black-Market Diversion’
FrenchQui a volé, a volé le sac d'oranges
‘Who Stole, Stole the Bag of Oranges’
GermanLieferung auf Umwegen
‘Delivery by Roundabout Ways’
English, Staelwyrn

Until now, I've had no choice but to rely on that charlatan Sevrin, even though I am full aware he's been doin' shady deals behind my back. More than once I've heard tell of improper tradin' with goblins.

German

Du erkennst ihn an seinem roten Kopftuch.

‘You'll know him by his red bandana.’

In the quest before, Washed Up, the German gave him a red cap, „an seiner roten Kappe“, 'by his red cap'. The English names no clothes.

English, Staelwyrn

Until now, I've had no choice but to rely on that charlatan Sevrin, even though I am full aware he's been doin' shady deals behind my back. More than once I've heard tell of improper tradin' with goblins.

‘I suspect that Sevrin, who is entrusted with the delivery, is selling the goods under the table.’

English: Staelwyrn is fully aware of Sevrin's shady deals; German: he only suspects it.

English, Staelwyrn

I wouldn't be the least surprised if that were happenin' right now. Not a bell ago, a sack of oranges vanished, as did Sevrin. I want you to find and confront the bastard for me, your name. I'm sure there's wrongdoin' afoot, so be sure to doubt anythin' that comes out of his mouth.

‘Even if he should have nothing to do with it, I'd at least like to make sure that the sacks of oranges he is carrying safely reach their destination.’

English: Staelwyrn is sure of wrongdoing; German allows that Sevrin may have nothing to do with it.

English, Sevrin

Bloody hells! I'm up the strait without a paddle!

‘Damn, I'm going to have to ask for help...’

‘Uh-oh, should I call for help...’

English puns on being up the strait without a paddle; French: he'll have to ask for help.

English puns on being up the strait without a paddle; Japanese: he wonders whether to call for help.

English, Sevrin

Bloody hells! I'm up the strait without a paddle!

German

Bei allen Seeschlangen des Jademeeres ...

‘By all the sea serpents of the Jade Sea ...’

German swears by the sea serpents of the Jade Sea; English says "Bloody hells".

English, Sevrin

What's this now? Staelwyrn sent you for the oranges? Huh... So the old bugger had known all this time... Argh, what does it matter anyway?

French

Raaah, merde ! Staelwyrn a découvert le pot aux roses...

‘Argh, damn it! Staelwyrn has found us out...’

It is an old set phrase for uncovering a hidden scheme.

English, Sevrin

You save me mates and, by the Navigator, you'll have your sack o' scurvy snacks!

German

Piratenehrenwort!

‘If you free my friends, I'll give back the orange sacks. Pirate's word of honour!’

German

Piratenehrenwort!

‘Pirate's word of honour!’

Like in Japanese, Sevrin keeps his word. Later the English pirate has no qualms about breaking it.

German has him swear on his pirate's honour; English swears by the Navigator.

English, Aylmer

I owe you one. Would've gotten away meself if not fer Sevrin shovin' me aside.

‘I'd gladly have made a run for it, but Sevrin pushed me in front of those filthy Goblins...’

English: Sevrin shoved him aside; French: Sevrin pushed him in front of the goblins.

English, Sozai Rarzai

If you hadn't come, my dodo would've been cooked! Mmm...cooked dodo.

‘Believe me, if I wasn't so damn hungry, I'd have given those Goblins a good thrashing myself.’

‘If my stomach weren't as empty as Sevrin's promises of big money, I'd have freed myself on my own long ago.’

‘If only I hadn't been hungry, I could have fought back too...’

English jokes his dodo would've been cooked, then craves cooked dodo; French: only hunger kept him from beating the goblins.

English jokes about a cooked dodo; German jokes his stomach is as empty as Sevrin's promises of big money.

English jokes about a cooked dodo; Japanese: he could have fought back if he weren't hungry.

English, Sevrin

S'pose I should be ashamed I couldn't clean up my own mess...

‘I fought like an ogre to protect my mates from the goblins, but it wasn't enough.’

English: Sevrin is ashamed he couldn't clean up his own mess; German: he claims he fought like an ogre.

English, Sevrin

...But a pirate knows no shame! I've no qualms about goin' back on my word! I'm only givin' you this sack 'cause I like the cut of your jib. Take it to Ossine, an' send him my regards.

‘I'll give the sack back, as promised.’

‘Well, as a rule, my promises are worth no more than a chocobo's fart, but since you fought well, here are the bags of oranges.’

German

Ich will mich also an mein Piratenehrenwort halten und die Orangen zurückgeben.

‘So I'll keep my pirate's word of honor and give back the oranges.’

The usual phrase for something worthless uses a rabbit: «pet de lapin», 'a rabbit's fart'.

English: he has no qualms about going back on his word; German: he'll keep his pirate's word of honor.

English, Ossine

What have we here? A delivery from Summerford Farms, and as scheduled? Hah! There's a first time for everything!

‘Well, that's a first, it actually arriving on time. Wonders will never cease.’

‘I don't know what that portends!’

German

Es geschehen noch Zeichen und Wunder.

‘Signs and wonders do still happen.’

‘Is this the harbinger of a storm...!?’

Ossine greets the on-time delivery with this Bible-born phrase, used as a joke.

French jokes that the on-time delivery must be an omen of something.

German uses the idiom "signs and wonders still happen": the punctual delivery is a miracle.

Japanese jokes the on-time delivery must be the omen of a storm.

English, Ossine

Well, look at that... Not a single one missing, either! About the only things not here are those bagmen, and I don't miss them one bit.

‘Hmm, the count's right too! So you lot can do it when you try... Oh, today's courier isn't Redcap? No wonder.’

‘Ah, but wait, you're not that layabout with the red bandana who usually comes.’

‘...Oh, today's delivery person isn't the red-cap? No wonder.’

赤帽 is Sevrin's nickname and also means a railway porter. So Ossine's joke is a pun.

French singles out the usual courier, a layabout in a red bandana; English speaks of "bagmen".

Japanese has him notice the usual red-capped courier is absent, which explains the full delivery.

English, Staelwyrn

I was even willin' to overlook the skimmin' off the top, but to sell us all short in favor of those godsforsaken goblins...

‘And even more so that he didn't hesitate to leave his comrades at the mercy of the Goblins.’

English: Sevrin sold them all short to the goblins; French: he left his comrades at the goblins' mercy.

Accepting the quest

Staelwyrn

Pains me to say, but all the gil in the world can't buy loyalty. There are some, like you, who can be trusted. But then there are others...

Staelwyrn

Until now, I've had no choice but to rely on that charlatan Sevrin, even though I am full aware he's been doin' shady deals behind my back. More than once I've heard tell of improper tradin' with goblins.

Confront Sevrin and cast /doubt on his actions

Sevrin

What's this now? Staelwyrn sent you for the oranges? Huh... So the old bugger had known all this time... Argh, what does it matter anyway?

Sevrin

Listen, you're one o' those goody-goody adventurer types, right? Go rescue me mates from those double-dealin' goblins! They're just over yonder by the bonfire.

Sevrin

You save me mates and, by the Navigator, you'll have your sack o' scurvy snacks!

Save Sevrin's henchmen

Aylmer

I owe you one. Would've gotten away meself if not fer Sevrin shovin' me aside.

Eyrimhus

Sevrin sent you? Hah! The way he flew out of here, I was sure he'd sold us down the river!

Sozai Rarzai

If you hadn't come, my dodo would've been cooked! Mmm...cooked dodo.

Speak with Sevrin

Sevrin

You saved me mates, and for that, I owe you.

Sevrin

...But a pirate knows no shame! I've no qualms about goin' back on my word! I'm only givin' you this sack 'cause I like the cut of your jib. Take it to Ossine, an' send him my regards.

Deliver the sack of oranges to Ossine at the La Thagran Checkpoint

Ossine

What have we here? A delivery from Summerford Farms, and as scheduled? Hah! There's a first time for everything!

Ossine

Well, look at that... Not a single one missing, either! About the only things not here are those bagmen, and I don't miss them one bit.

Ossine

Here's Staelwyrn's payment in full. With you, I can trust it'll reach him!

Staelwyrn

Back in one piece! That's a relief. How did you fare, your name?

Report to Staelwyrn at Summerford Farms

Staelwyrn

Ah, this is what I was aimin' for! Looks to be all I was owed, all right. Though, I'd be tellin' you false if I claimed I had not held out more hope for Sevrin.

Staelwyrn

I was even willin' to overlook the skimmin' off the top, but to sell us all short in favor of those godsforsaken goblins...

Staelwyrn

You'd do well to mind yourself around that two-gil cheat. If he'd leave his own mates for dead, there's no tellin' what he'd do to you.
