Grimoire Fandango

Quest giver Thubyrgeim in Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks

Summary and analysis

SummaryAnalysis

Thubyrgeim believes only the absent guildmaster can help K'lyhia, as he did once before. She tells you his name, K'rhid Tia, though he prefers not to use it. She is glad when K'lyhia recovers, and finds both her and the guildmaster hard to read.

The Arcanist storyline

Your class story: K'lyhia's past with the exiled pirate Doesmaga, played out at Mealvaan's Gate and Oschon's Embrace.

Pirates and the AdmiralThe Arcanist’s art

What happens, step by step

  1. Acting Guildmaster Thubyrgeim would have your assistance in tracking down a certain someone.
  2. You learn from Thubyrgeim that the elusive guildmaster, K'rhid Tia, has at long last been spotted. She believes that the guildmaster holds the key to breaking K'lyhia free from her depression. Travel to Memeroon's Trading Post in upper La Noscea, and question a local as to K'rhid Tia's current whereabouts.
  3. One of the trading post locals tells you of the guildmaster's intended destination. Travel next to Thalaos, and speak with the scholar who makes his camp in the area.
  4. The scholar Tanga Tonga has a message for you from the guildmaster. It appears you are to locate three slips of parchment upon each of which are written parts of a single clue.
  5. You have collected the three slips of parchment. Deliver the curious missives to Tanga Tonga.
  6. After deciphering the Allagan script, Tanga Tonga reads to you the guildmaster's instructions. Though the clues are somewhat cryptic, you determine that you are to travel to Fool Falls and /dance before an old wooden box found somewhere in the area...
  7. You have located the old wooden box and have danced for it like you've never danced before. Prise open the lid and see what wonders await you.
  8. You have defeated the tree slugs that sprung when you attempted to open the box. Ready yourself for anything, and attempt to open the box once more.
  9. The box holds no further nasty surprises for you, and you have found yet another slip of parchment within. The parchment has directed you to Memeroon's Trading Post in upper La Noscea, where you should seek out the owner and /dance for him.
  10. The guildmaster was watching as you performed your dance for Memeroon, apparently needing a diversion from his studies. After applauding your effort, he gifts you with a new grimoire and recommends you deliver it to K'lyhia. Follow the arcanist's instructions, and /dance for K'lyhia in the Anchor Yard of Limsa Lominsa.
  11. After performing a dance for K'lyhia, she deduces that you have met with Guildmaster K'rhid Tia. Hand over the new grimoire to the foreseer to answer her question as to why.
  12. You give the new tome to K'lyhia, and the foreseer soon realizes the significance of the gift: it is within her to shape the world into the reality she desires. And that reality is one in which she defeats Doesmaga. Return to the Arcanists' Guild, and inform Thubyrgeim of the assessor's recovery.
  13. Thubyrgeim appears relieved to hear the news of K'lyhia's decision to return to duty. The foreseer is, however, yet bound by the chains of her past. Focus your efforts on your training, and prepare yourself for the forthcoming confrontation with Doesmaga. ※The next arcanist quest will be available from Thubyrgeim upon reaching level 30.
Where it leads

Next in the play order: Sinking Doesmaga. Thubyrgeim takes the satchel so the costume can go back to its owner.

Worth knowing

LoreThe Arcanist’s art

Thubyrgeim says the guildmaster avoids his own name. Among Seeker of the Sun men, the second name is a rank. Nunh is for a tribe's breeding male, and Tia is for the rest.

Lore

You search the bones of Thalaos, bleached white by the sun. Rumor says they are the bones of one of the legendary twin sea serpents. People believe the Navigator, Llymlaen, set these serpents loose.

Easter egg

The reward, Picatrix, has the same name as a real-world book. That book brings together older works on magic and astrology.

Title reference

The title plays on Grim Fandango, the 1998 adventure game by LucasArts. A fandango is also a dance. That fits a quest where you /dance your way to the guildmaster.

Characters

Who they are, and what they do in this quest.

Thubyrgeim

Thubyrgeim is still worried about K'lyhia, who walks about as if all joy has left her since her grimoire was ruined.

Thubyrgeim believes only the absent guildmaster can help K'lyhia, as he did once before. She tells you his name, K'rhid Tia, though he prefers not to use it. She is glad when K'lyhia recovers, and finds both her and the guildmaster hard to read.

K'rhid Tia

The absent guildmaster, K'rhid Tia, has at last been spotted near Memeroon's Trading Post in upper La Noscea.

You meet K'rhid Tia. The clues and the dancing were his way to meet you. He keeps notes on every guild member and loves to steer events. He gives you a grimoire for K'lyhia. Tia, his second name, is a Seeker of the Sun rank.

K'lyhia

K'lyhia is still crushed by the loss of her grimoire and has not found her spirit again.

K'lyhia's mind has gone silent in her sadness. She guesses that you met the guildmaster. His new grimoire matches the first one he gave her, and she reads his message: shape reality as she wants. She resolves to defeat Doesmaga and returns to duty.

Memeroon

Memeroon is the owner of Memeroon's Trading Post in upper La Noscea, where the guildmaster was spotted.

Memeroon owns the trading post that bears his name. When you dance for him, he cheers in simple, broken words about a funny Miqo'te dance and asks if you dance too. K'rhid Tia is watching the whole show.

Other languages

The game was written in Japanese and rewritten, not just translated, for each language. Here is what the other versions say, next to the English.

Japanese
‘Free-and-Easy Diversionary Tactics’
FrenchParcours cynético-énigmatique
‘A 'Cynetico'-Enigmatic Course (coinage; kinetic?)’
GermanSchwing das Tanzbein
‘Swing the Dance Leg! (i.e. get dancing)’
English, Thubyrgeim

Have you come to ask about K'lyhia's condition? The foreseer is...unchanged. She walks about as if all the joy in life has been leeched from her soul.

‘She has lost all motivation and looks more like a puppet of flesh and bone than anything else.’

‘She has lost the will to live and has become like a breathing doll.’

English says all joy has been drained from her soul; French says she is like a flesh-and-bone puppet.

English says all joy has been drained from her soul; Japanese says she is like a breathing doll.

English, Thubyrgeim

I believe the only one who can help her now is the same person who broke K'lyhia out of her shell the first time: our absent guildmaster. And─though I am leery of the coincidence─the man himself has at long last been spotted.

‘If only the guildmaster were here and would save her, just like six years ago - just as I had said this, I learned that someone claims to have seen the guildmaster.’

‘If only the master would help that girl like six years ago... just as I was thinking that, a report came in that the guildmaster had been seen.’

English says he helped her "the first time"; German says six years ago.

English says he helped her "the first time"; Japanese says six years ago.

English, Thubyrgeim

Should you seek out his last known location, it is unlikely he will still be there. And even should you catch him, he may not deign to speak with you. Nevertheless, this may be our only chance.

‘The problem is: first we have to verify the report and then, if it seems credible, track down the guildmaster.’

English warns he has probably moved on already; German says the sighting report must first be verified.

English, Tanga Tonga

As it so happens, he bid me pass on a message to anyone who came searching for him. Ahem. “Reunited, the three slips of parchment hold the problem to the solution.”

German

„Die drei versteckten sind des Rätsels Anfang und Ende.

‘By the way, he left a message in case someone came asking after him: "The three hidden are the riddle's beginning and end."’

German's clue calls them the riddle's beginning and end; English says they hold "the problem to the solution".

English, Tanga Tonga

The guildmaster mentioned that the slips of parchment are concealed among the bones of Thalaos. I suppose you are expected to search for them.

‘If the guildmaster really did hide something, then probably here nearby.’

English says the guildmaster told him where the parchments are hidden; German only guesses he may have hidden something nearby.

English, Tanga Tonga

The guildmaster mentioned that the slips of parchment are concealed among the bones of Thalaos. I suppose you are expected to search for them.

German

Tja, mehr weiß ich auch nicht.

‘Well, I don't know any more than that either.’

In German the scholar knows nothing more and only guesses; in English the guildmaster told him where.

English,

Slips of Parchment: “Seek the box at Fool Falls.” “Dance a jig for your wooden audience.” “Claim the secret from the opened heart.”

‘at Fool Falls, marked by time, dance and see what happens, open the casket without worry or doubt’

‘If you open the wooden box made happy by the "dance", you will obtain the proposition.’

German's rhyme tells you to open the casket without worry; English speaks of a secret in an opened heart.

Japanese says the box is made happy by the dance and yields "the proposition"; English mentions an opened heart.

English, Tanga Tonga

A most cryptic set of instructions, I must say. Do you intend to follow them? This guildmaster of yours certainly enjoys his games...

‘What on earth is this cock-and-bull story? I've never heard of boxes that would enjoy having someone dance for them.’

It means absurd nonsense. The English scholar only calls the note cryptic.

English, Tanga Tonga

A most cryptic set of instructions, I must say. Do you intend to follow them? This guildmaster of yours certainly enjoys his games...

‘If anything, aren't you just being made to dance by the master?’

English says the guildmaster enjoys his games; Japanese jokes that you are only being "made to dance" by him.

English, Tanga Tonga

A most cryptic set of instructions, I must say. Do you intend to follow them? This guildmaster of yours certainly enjoys his games...

German

Hast du etwa vor, diesen Unsinn auszuprobieren?

‘Do you really intend to try out this nonsense?’

German scholar calls the instructions nonsense; English only asks whether you'll follow them.

English, System

The box rattles and thumps about, as if something within seeks to be freed. It appears the lid has been loosened somewhat...

‘You get the impression that something has changed, as if (item) had been delighted.’

‘It is as if the casket, or something inside it, were delighted by your dance ...’

‘Inside the box something squirms, as if it were rejoicing.’

English says something inside wants to be freed; French says the box seems delighted.

English says something inside wants to be freed; German says the casket or something in it seems delighted by your dance.

English says something inside wants to be freed; Japanese says it seems to be rejoicing.

English, Memeroon

Funny Miqo'te dance funny dance! You dance funny dance too?

German

Miqo'te tanzen guuut, du schleeecht! Oder?

‘Miqo'te dance goood, you baaad! Right?’

English asks if you dance a funny dance too; German says Miqo'te dance well and you dance badly.

English, K'rhid Tia

Ah, now that was most entertaining. I must have something to amuse me during these little jaunts back to civilization, you understand.

French

Chapeau, l'arrrtiste !

‘Hats off to the arrrtist! It's been ages since I saw anyone dance so gracefully.’

Like in Japanese, K'rhid Tia is breezy and familiar. He also rolls his r's like K'lyhia, while the English one is aloof and formal.

English, K'rhid Tia

Ah, now that was most entertaining. I must have something to amuse me during these little jaunts back to civilization, you understand.

German

Du solltest öfter mal vorbeischauen.

‘You should drop by more often.’

English says he needs amusement on his trips back to civilization; German tells you to drop by more often.

English, K'rhid Tia

Ah, now that was most entertaining. I must have something to amuse me during these little jaunts back to civilization, you understand.

French

Chapeau, l'arrrtiste !

‘Hats off, arrrtist!’

French K'rhid Tia purrs his r's and applauds you as an artist; English is drily amused, no accent.

English, K'rhid Tia

Based on my evaluation of your abilities, however, I calculated that you would arrive at this point somewhat earlier. You balked at the dancing, didn't you?

‘Were you thinking up a few new dance steps?’

English says you hesitated to dance; German asks if you were working out new dance steps.

English, K'rhid Tia

Based on my evaluation of your abilities, however, I calculated that you would arrive at this point somewhat earlier. You balked at the dancing, didn't you?

‘And yet, according to my calculations, with an arcano-algebraic quotient like that, you should have arrived sooner, in my humble opinion.’

French invents a mock-scientific "arcano-algebraic quotient"; English just says his evaluation of your abilities.

English, K'rhid Tia

Heh heh. Fascinating.

German

Verzeih mir.

‘Forgive me. You look like someone who can take a little joke.’

English just says "Fascinating"; German apologizes and says you look like someone who can take a joke.

English, K'rhid Tia

As an arcanist, it was a simple matter to engineer events so that I might meet you face-to-face. After all, strategy is a tool used to manipulate one's situation into the desired reality.

German

„Taktik ist das Mittel, um unsere Träume zu verwirklichen“, weißt du?

‘"Tactics are the means to make our dreams come true," you know?’

German's guild maxim speaks of making dreams come true; English of manipulating one's situation into the desired reality.

English, K'rhid Tia

And I do so enjoy seeing others dance in the palm of my hand, as it were.

‘In other words, I made you dance the way a puppeteer with his puppet would have.’

French image is a puppeteer working his puppet; English has you dancing in the palm of his hand.

English, K'rhid Tia

Here, you may have this. Think of it as payment for your...performance.

‘Here, I'm giving you this for the trouble you took to get all the way here.’

‘It's a reward for you, for making it all the way here.’

English calls it payment for your performance; French says it is for the trouble of getting here.

English calls it payment for your performance; Japanese says it is a reward for making it this far.

English, K'rhid Tia

Before you give K'lyhia the grimoire, however, I must insist that you dance for her. I will know if you don't.

‘How-ev-er. Before you hand K'lyhia the book, show her your dance, promise, okay?’

K'rhid Tia chats in a playful sing-song and spells words out syllable by syllable. The English voice is dry and aloof.

English, K'rhid Tia

All this banal interaction has simply exhausted me. It is time I returned to my studies.

‘It's just that it had been a long time since I'd had to do it...’

‘Having talked with people for the first time in a long while, I've somehow got tired...’

French blames being out of practice at talking; English dismisses the conversation as "banal interaction".

Japanese says he's tired from talking to people after so long; English calls it "banal interaction".

English, K'rhid Tia

All this banal interaction has simply exhausted me. It is time I returned to my studies.

‘... I haven't been among people for so long ...’

German says he's unused to company; English dismisses the conversation as "banal interaction".

English, K'rhid Tia

You, on the other hand, should travel forthwith to the Anchor Yard in Limsa Lominsa. Be well, your name. We shall meet again.

German

Vielleicht kannst du berechnen, wen du dort triffst.

‘Maybe you can calculate who you will meet there.’

English says they will meet again; German suggests you calculate whom you will meet there.

English, K'rhid Tia

I'm 100% certain of it.

‘We will see each other again; for that I calculate a hundred-"prophecent" probability.’

German coins a pun blending "percent" and "prophecy" for his hundred-percent prediction.

English, K'lyhia

My mind is ordinarily a whirlwind of probabilities and feints and counterattacks, but now there is naught but silence. This is how it once used to be...and perhaps how it always will be from now on.

‘It's not so bad, really...’

‘It is fine this way now...’

English fears it may stay this way forever; French says it is not so bad after all.

English fears it may stay this way forever; Japanese says it is fine this way.

English, K'lyhia

My mind is ordinarily a whirlwind of probabilities and feints and counterattacks, but now there is naught but silence. This is how it once used to be...and perhaps how it always will be from now on.

German

Wie damals, mit der Kette am Bein ...

‘Like back then, with the chain on my leg ...’

English says this is how things once were; German says like back then, with a chain on her leg.

English, K'lyhia

He gave you this grimoire to give to me? Uncanny... It is identical to the tome I received the first time I ever met our leader...

French

Mais c'est son grrrimoire !

‘Oh!? But it's his grimoire!’

‘This... is the master's grimoire, isn't it?’

English asks if he sent this grimoire for her; French says it is the guildmaster's own grimoire.

English asks if he sent this grimoire for her; Japanese says it is the master's own grimoire.

English, K'lyhia

Assuming Precondition C, the introduction of Variable M would alter Scenario A in a manner which would perforce require...

‘Sooo, for an aethero-equilateral situation X... and if the mana-variable condition M is recognised... then the phenomeno-supernatural equation C leads to the integral result...’

French fills her muttering with invented mock-scientific jargon; English uses plain Precondition, Variable and Scenario.

English, Thubyrgeim

It is unfortunate, however, that both K'lyhia and our guildmaster are possessed of such impenetrable personalities. But at least in the case of the foreseer, we have an inkling as to the nature of the cage that imprisons her.

‘Well, everything would have been simpler and quicker if Master K'rhid Tia didn't have this annoying habit of toying with people.’

English says both K'lyhia and the guildmaster have impenetrable personalities; French blames only K'rhid Tia's habit of toying with people.

English, Thubyrgeim

It is unfortunate, however, that both K'lyhia and our guildmaster are possessed of such impenetrable personalities. But at least in the case of the foreseer, we have an inkling as to the nature of the cage that imprisons her.

‘Now she has the chance to settle accounts with her past and cast off her shackles forever.’

English says they only have an inkling of what imprisons her; German says she can now cast off her shackles forever.

English, Thubyrgeim

I continue to hope that her partnership with you shall gradually pry those bars apart. Return to your training, your name, and prepare yourself for the demanding tactics K'lyhia is sure to formulate in the days ahead.

‘There will be an encounter with Doesmaga.’

English hopes working with you will free K'lyhia; German announces a coming encounter with Doesmaga.

Pray travel to Memeroon's Trading Post in upper La Noscea, and speak with anyone who might have seen the guildmaster. Oh, and one more thing: though he prefers us not to use it for some inexplicable reason, our leader's name is K'rhid Tia.

Speak with a local at Memeroon's Trading Post

Witness

Evening/Afternoon, miss/sir. Aye, I was the one as sent word to your guild about spotting your leader. It's a right rare sight to see K'rhid Tia roaming about! He asked me the way to Thalaos. Could be he was seeking to speak with the scholar who lives out there.

Speak with the scholar at Thalaos

Tanga Tonga

Hello there. Why, yes, I did receive a visit from a gentleman identifying himself as the arcanists' guildmaster. An odd fellow, but obviously possessed of a well-rounded education.

Tanga Tonga

As it so happens, he bid me pass on a message to anyone who came searching for him. Ahem. “Reunited, the three slips of parchment hold the problem to the solution.”

Deliver the slips of parchment to Tanga Tonga

Tanga Tonga

Have you tracked down those three slips of parchment?

Tanga Tonga

Hm, interesting. They actually exist. To be perfectly honest, I thought you had been sent on a wild-dodo chase. Let's have a look at these, shall we? ...Well, well, penned in ancient Allagan, no less. Fortunately for you, I have a passing familiarity with the script...

Slips of Parchment: “Seek the box at Fool Falls.” “Dance a jig for your wooden audience.” “Claim the secret from the opened heart.”

Tanga Tonga

A most cryptic set of instructions, I must say. Do you intend to follow them? This guildmaster of yours certainly enjoys his games...

System

System

The lid of the box is jammed shut.

Slip of Parchment: “If there are answers you would seek, Then to the trading post now go, Before the owner, be not meek, With your two feet, provide a show.”

Open the old wooden box

/dance for Memeroon at Memeroon's Trading Post

Memeroon

Funny Miqo'te dance funny dance! You dance funny dance too?

K'rhid Tia

Based on my evaluation of your abilities, however, I calculated that you would arrive at this point somewhat earlier. You balked at the dancing, didn't you?

K'rhid Tia

I never expected you to be so shy.

K'rhid Tia

Heh heh, another variable to add to your list of characteristics. I keep extensive mental notes of all the guild's members, you see.

K'rhid Tia

Heh heh. Fascinating.

K'rhid Tia

As an arcanist, it was a simple matter to engineer events so that I might meet you face-to-face. After all, strategy is a tool used to manipulate one's situation into the desired reality.

K'rhid Tia

And I do so enjoy seeing others dance in the palm of my hand, as it were.

K'rhid Tia

Here, you may have this. Think of it as payment for your...performance.

K'rhid Tia

Though you might consider passing the tome on to K'lyhia. That is the reason you sought me out, was it not?

K'rhid Tia

Before you give K'lyhia the grimoire, however, I must insist that you dance for her. I will know if you don't.

K'rhid Tia

All this banal interaction has simply exhausted me. It is time I returned to my studies.

K'rhid Tia

You, on the other hand, should travel forthwith to the Anchor Yard in Limsa Lominsa. Be well, your name. We shall meet again.

K'rhid Tia

I'm 100% certain of it.

/dance for K'lyhia in the Anchor Yard of Limsa Lominsa

K'lyhia

My mind is ordinarily a whirlwind of probabilities and feints and counterattacks, but now there is naught but silence. This is how it once used to be...and perhaps how it always will be from now on.

K'lyhia

Were you always one for dancing? I don't recall any such pref─ ...Ah. You have met with our guildmaster, haven't you?

K'lyhia

That would explain your odd behavior. He does so enjoy seeing people perform unexpected acts of frivolity.

K'lyhia

It is typical of him to offer no introduction, but there is no mistaking the identity of the man you met. No one else takes such delight in seeing people perform unexpected acts of frivolity.

K'lyhia

But what could have spurred our reticent guildmaster to speak with you in person?

Hand over the new grimoire to K'lyhia

K'lyhia

He gave you this grimoire to give to me? Uncanny... It is identical to the tome I received the first time I ever met our leader...

K'lyhia

You have my thanks, your name. The guildmaster is fond of games and mischief, and I understand the troublesome trials he likely put you through before deeming you worthy of his attention.

K'lyhia

With this gift, however, his message to me is abundantly clear: I am to shape reality into the one I desire.

K'lyhia

And that means defeating Doesmaga!

K'lyhia

Gods, my mind is alive again with strategies! I must have time to think. Pray inform Mistress Thubyrgeim of my return to duty.

Report to Thubyrgeim at the Arcanists' Guild

Thubyrgeim

K'lyhia has recovered from her despondency? This is wonderful news, and we have you to thank for it.

Thubyrgeim

I continue to hope that her partnership with you shall gradually pry those bars apart. Return to your training, your name, and prepare yourself for the demanding tactics K'lyhia is sure to formulate in the days ahead.
