Summary and analysis

SummaryAnalysis

Fraeloef sends you to check on Khanswys, the lighthouse keeper. When he hears the furnace is damaged, he writes reports and sends you to Forgemaster H'naanza in Limsa Lominsa for quick repairs. His name means "Free Leaf" in old Roegadyn.

The Skylift and Swiftperch

Rebuilding after the Calamity: the swamped Skylift, and Swiftperch, the village the Serpent Reavers attack in Ch. 6.

Pirates and the AdmiralAfter the Calamity

What happens, step by step

  1. Fraeloef, a Yellowjacket on guard duty in Swiftperch, wants you to visit the Brewer's Beacon and investigate the reason behind the waning light.
  2. With the lighthouse beam having grown dangerously dim, the ships on the water could soon find themselves sailing into unseen hazards. Visit the Brewer's Beacon and discover what has befallen Khanswys, the lighthouse keeper.
  3. Locate the scarecrow in the middle of the dodo nesting grounds known as “the Flock,” and set the iron brazier down on the ground nearby.
  4. Light a fire in the brazier to attract the attention of the runaway bomb. Defeat the torchlight and obtain a bomb claw from its remains.
  5. You have obtained the bomb claw Khanswys needs to fuel her furnace. Return to the Brewer's Beacon and deliver the smoldering digit to the lighthouse keeper.
  6. Though the bomb claw is able to power the lighthouse beacon for the time being, Khanswys is dubious about the quality of her makeshift repairs. Return to Swiftperch and report the situation to Fraeloef.
  7. Fraeloef intends to file reports regarding the incident at the lighthouse, but is concerned about the fragile state of the furnace. The Yellowjacket requests that you make haste to the Armorers' Guild and ask Forgemaster H'naanza to oversee the necessary repairs.
  8. After hearing your request, Forgemaster H'naanza agrees to have the faulty furnace repaired. The armorer mentions, with some irritation, that the furnace was only just recently fixed. It seems that the bomb trapped inside may have been overly volatile, but could there be another reason for the device's failure...?
Remember this

The journal ends with a question. Why did a furnace that was fixed barely a week earlier fail? No later quest in this chart answers it. But trouble returns to Swiftperch in step 19.

The beacon's candlekeeps also watch for sudden tidal waves. These waves come more and more often. They happen because the Lord of the Whorl is starting to move. This hints at trouble ahead.

Key lines explained

The lines worth a second look, in the order you hear them, and what each one means.

In Limsa Lominsa

H'naanzaThe furnace in the Brewer's Beacon needs repairs? Byregot's beard, I just sent someone out to tinker with it not a week past. Mayhap the bomb Khanswys had trapped in there was a touch too volatile...?
Easter egg

Forgemaster H'naanza swears 'Byregot's beard'. This calls on Byregot the Builder, the god craftsmen pray to. That is just right for the head of the Armorers' Guild.

H'naanzaI'll have an artisan visit the lighthouse and pay special attention to reinforcing the casing of that furnace. Your work is done here, adventurer. May the Navigator guide you on your journeys.
Lore

Khanswys swears by Llymlaen. Every Lominsan calls on 'the Navigator', and Llymlaen is the goddess behind that name. Among the Twelve, Llymlaen is the guardian goddess of Limsa.

More about this quest

LoreTrade and the city

The name Brewer's Beacon fits. It keeps trade ships safe as they carry beer out of Aleport. The beers are dark stouts and blonde barleywines.

Easter egg

Fraeloef is the guard who sends you to the beacon. The name means 'Free Leaf' in the traditional Roegadyn language.

The beacon's candlekeeps also watch for sudden tidal waves. These waves come more and more often. They happen because the Lord of the Whorl is starting to move. This hints at trouble ahead.

Final Fantasy nodThe Arcanist’s art

The bomb here is a Final Fantasy classic. In Final Fantasy IV, the Bomb was even a secret summon for Rydia, the game's summoner.

In-game text

The Bomb Claw's item text says it is too hot to touch. It is what is left of a voidsent bomb. It will set fire to almost anything it touches.

Patch change

Patch 5.3 shortened the A Realm Reborn main story. It removed 'Farmer of Fortune'. That quest used to sit between 'Thanks a Million' and this step.

Characters

Who they are, and what they do in this quest.

H'naanza

Forgemaster H'naanza is at work in the Armorers' Guild in Limsa Lominsa.

H'naanza is annoyed: she sent someone to fix the beacon's furnace less than a week ago. She guesses the trapped bomb was too wild, and agrees to send an artisan to strengthen the furnace. She swears "Byregot's beard", calling on the craftsmen's god.

Fraeloef

Fraeloef is a Yellowjacket guard on duty at Swiftperch. He sees that the Brewer's Beacon lighthouse shines too weakly to guide ships, but he cannot leave his post.

Fraeloef sends you to check on Khanswys, the lighthouse keeper. When he hears the furnace is damaged, he writes reports and sends you to Forgemaster H'naanza in Limsa Lominsa for quick repairs. His name means "Free Leaf" in old Roegadyn.

Khanswys

Khanswys is the keeper of the Brewer's Beacon, the lighthouse that guides ships in the bay. Its light has grown dangerously dim.

The bomb, a fiery monster, that fuels Khanswys's furnace has escaped. She sends you to lure it with a fire and bring back its claw. That keeps the beacon going, but she finds the furnace broken and wants a real smith. She swears by Llymlaen.

German

English asks if the light now seems uncommonly weak; German says it suddenly dimmed during his night watch.

Japanese

よかったら、俺の話を聞かないか?

‘If you don't mind, won't you hear me out?’

Japanese Fraeloef casually asks whether you'd listen; English hails you with a curt command.

English, Fraeloef

It cannot possibly be bright enough to guide the ships sailing in the bay. I would march over to the lighthouse and investigate myself, but I am duty-bound to remain at my post.

French

J'aimerais bien faire quelque chose, mais je suis d'astreinte, je dois monter la garde devant cette éthérite.

‘I would like to do something, but I am on duty, I have to stand guard in front of this aetheryte.’

German

Ich würde gerne nachsehen, aber ich kann den Ätheryten nicht unbewacht lassen.

‘I would like to go and check, but I cannot leave the aetheryte unguarded.’

Japanese

English, Khanswys

Take this here iron brazier an' set her down in the middle o' the Flock─somewhere near the scarecrow, I'd say. Ye get a nice fire goin', an' that frisky bomb'll soon be about. Watch ye don't singe yer eyebrows, lass/lad.

French

Ensuite, tu y allumes un feu, ça devrait attirer notre boule incandescente en balade. Tu n'auras plus qu'à lui montrer de quel bois tu te chauffes.

‘Then you light a fire there, and that should lure our roaming fireball over. All you'll have to do then is show it what you're made of.’

The idiom means showing your mettle. Khanswys says it as you light a brazier, which makes it apt.

French

Tu n'auras plus qu'à lui montrer de quel bois tu te chauffes.

‘Then all you'll have to do is show it what wood you burn.’

English warns you not to singe your eyebrows; French uses a fire idiom: show it what you're made of.

German

Lass dich von ihm finden!

‘Well, quite simply: let him find you!’

German quips that you should let the bomb find you; English warns you not to singe your eyebrows.

English, H'naanza

The furnace in the Brewer's Beacon needs repairs? Byregot's beard, I just sent someone out to tinker with it not a week past. Mayhap the bomb Khanswys had trapped in there was a touch too volatile...?

French

Comment ? Le fourrrneau du phare des Brasseurs est endommagé... !?

‘What? The furnace of the Brewers' lighthouse is damaged...!?’

Forgemaster H'naanza's rolled r's are spelled out on the page. The English has her swear by Byregot's beard instead.

Accepting the quest

Fraeloef

You there. Adventurer. Cast your eyes towards the Brewer's Beacon. Does the light not seem uncommonly weak?

Fraeloef

It cannot possibly be bright enough to guide the ships sailing in the bay. I would march over to the lighthouse and investigate myself, but I am duty-bound to remain at my post.

Fraeloef

I would consider it a favor if you could make a visit to the Brewer's Beacon and see if aught has befallen Khanswys, the lighthouse keeper.

At Brewer's Beacon

Khanswys

Ye say a Yellowjacket sent ye here? Eh? Me light's grown dim, has it? Well, o' course it bloody has!

Khanswys

The bomb what fuels me furnace has up an' buggered off, ye see. If I don't get that beacon fixed up soon, there'll be trouble on the water...

Khanswys

I know yer just the messenger, lass/lad, but I can tell a 'venturer when I see one. I'm goin' to need ye to chase down that bomb an' bring back a claw what ye ripped from its smolderin' corpse.

Khanswys

Take this here iron brazier an' set her down in the middle o' the Flock─somewhere near the scarecrow, I'd say. Ye get a nice fire goin', an' that frisky bomb'll soon be about. Watch ye don't singe yer eyebrows, lass/lad.

Back at Brewer's Beacon

Khanswys

All ye need do is take down that runaway bomb an' bring me one of its little claws.

Khanswys

Ah, ye got the ashy bastard, did ye? Once I put this little firecracker in the furnace, that should keep things runnin' for a while.

Khanswys

I had meself a bit of a look while ye was gone, an' Llymlaen curse me if the furnace weren't all bent an' broken. Small wonder the bloody bomb was able to escape.

Khanswys

I patched things up as best I could, but I ain't no smitty. Ye might want to have a chat with that Yellowjacket friend o' yers in Swiftperch, an' have him pass the word back to someone in Limsa.

Back at Swiftperch

Fraeloef

The furnace is damaged, is it? Very well, I shall write up the relevant reports, but these repairs must needs be effected without delay.

Fraeloef

It seems I have another favor to ask of you, adventurer. Take yourself straightway to the Armorers' Guild in Limsa Lominsa and explain the situation to Forgemaster H'naanza.

In Limsa Lominsa

H'naanza

The furnace in the Brewer's Beacon needs repairs? Byregot's beard, I just sent someone out to tinker with it not a week past. Mayhap the bomb Khanswys had trapped in there was a touch too volatile...?

H'naanza
