Failure to Lunch

Quest giver Wafufu in Lower La Noscea

Summary and analysis

SummaryAnalysis

Wafufu gets very anxious. She must stay with her cart, so you search for the lunches. She fears the hungry foreman Ahtbyrm might eat her, and is relieved when all four return. The journal says this would almost surely never have happened.

Life at the shipyard

The workers behind the warship Victory; the lumber count shows Limsa may need Gridania's wood, and the story soon sends you there (MSQ #22).

What happens, step by step

  1. Poor Wafufu's food cart is light a few lunches, and she needs help locating the lost meals.
  2. Search the Moraby Drydocks for four missing lunches.
  3. You have located all four lunches. Now hurry them back to Wafufu before foreman Ahtbyrm does something drastic!
  4. Your efforts have spared Wafufu a terrible fate...that in all likelihood would have never befallen her anyway (but don't tell her that).

Worth knowing

Easter egg

Wafufu is sure the hungry foreman will eat her. The quest journal adds, with a straight face, that this would almost certainly never have happened to her.

Easter egg

Sea Wolf names mean something in old Roegadyn. Maetimynd is the armorer who likes to show off and holds one of the lunches. The name means 'Mighty Mouth', word for word.

Easter egg

You track down Lyngstyrm here, the one who snatched the lunch. The name means 'Long Storm' in the ancient Roegadyn language.

Easter egg

Lyngstyrm's idle talk is about a 'handsome wench' and her curves. It turns out to be about the ship: 'I'm talking about the Victory, you gutter-dwellin' landlubber!'

In-game text

Each packed lunch holds boiled boar, stewed dodo, steamed cabbage, stone cheese and day-old bread. That is all a hard-working shipwright needs to keep his (or her) strength.

Title reference

The title changes 'Failure to Launch', the 2006 film, into lunch. The phrase also suits a shipyard. There, launching the ship is the whole point of the work.

Characters

Who they are, and what they do in this quest.

Ahtbyrm

Foreman Ahtbyrm is at the Drydocks waiting for his lunch, but some of Wafufu's lunches are missing.

Ahtbyrm does not speak here. Wafufu mentions him as the hungry foreman whose belly keeps grumbling and who gives her "the evil eye". She fears he might eat her if the lunches stay lost.

Wafufu

Wafufu runs a food cart at the Moraby Drydocks. Four of her packed lunches have gone missing, and the workers are hungry.

Lyngstyrm

Lyngstyrm is a worker at the Moraby Drydocks. You meet him while searching for Wafufu's lost lunches.

Lyngstyrm took a lunch knowing it was not his, since it is his day off. He gives it back and asks you not to tell Wafufu, so she does not think he tried to cheat her. His name means "Long Storm" in old Roegadyn.

Maetimynd

Maetimynd is an armorer at the Moraby Drydocks who pounds and shapes iron sheets all day. You meet him while searching for Wafufu's lost lunches.

Maetimynd has one of Wafufu's lunches and had started to think she liked him. He says she is not his type: he likes taller, heavier, bluer women. He gives the meal back. His name means "Mighty Mouth" in old Roegadyn.

Don't tell me. You came to collect my lunch. I can see it in them accusing eyes of yours.

‘Little Wafufu is looking for the lunch, you say? Then take this lunch to her. I'm off duty today, so I wasn't supposed to get a lunch anyway.’

Lyngstyrm is no thief and hands the lunch back. He came only to see where the Victory most needs that work.

English, Lyngstyrm

Don't tell me. You came to collect my lunch. I can see it in them accusing eyes of yours.

French

Tiens, t'as qu'à prendre celui-ci.

‘Here, just take this one.’

‘Then take this lunch with you.’

English: he guiltily sees accusation in your eyes; French: he simply hands over the lunch.

English: he guiltily sees accusation in your eyes; Japanese: he simply hands over the lunch.

English, Lyngstyrm

Sure, I knew right well that none of these lunches was meant for me, what with today being my day off and all. But I never thought little Wafufu would miss just one.

French

Eh ben, j'admire le Victoire, pardi !

‘Well, I'm admiring the Victoire, of course!’

‘I was gazing at the Victory here, which is under construction.’

English admits he took a lunch hoping Wafufu wouldn't miss one; French says he is here admiring the Victoire.

English, Lyngstyrm

If I give back the lunch, would you promise me you'll not mention that it was I who took it? I don't want the lass to think I was trying to swindle her...though that's sort of what I was trying to do... But she doesn't have to know that now, does she? Right then! Carry on!

‘Tomorrow we're making the hull watertight, so I wanted to check the spots that need it most.’

‘Actually, we're going to caulk and tar the hull tomorrow, so I'm checking for spots below the waterline that need special attention.’

Here too, Lyngstyrm is no thief. He checks the hull for the next day's job.

English, Maetimynd

And here I was beginnin' to think the lass had eyes fer me. Not that she's me type, mind ye. I like me women a few hands taller...and a few ponzes heavier...and a few shades bluer, if ye catch me drift.

‘Huh, it was one each!? And here I thought she wanted to reward me for working so hard... I'm a master smith, you know!’

French

Et moi qui croyais qu'elle avait voulu me récompenser parce que je me décarcassais...

‘And here I thought she wanted to reward me because I've been working my tail off...’

‘I was sure it was a reward for me, working so hard.’

Maetimynd took his second lunch as a reward for his work. In English he thought Wafufu fancied him.

I wouldn't have minded the extra meal, though. A man can work up quite a cravin' when he's been poundin', stretchin', and shapin' sheets of iron all day/day.

‘It's these magic arms that made all the vital parts of this ship... like the reef cleats, the shroud chains and even the cannons!’

‘Sail fasteners, rope latches, and cannons too... I make the things a ship can't do without, with these hands.’

English cites shaping sheets of iron all day; French lists cleats, shroud chains and cannons he made for the ship.

English, Wafufu

Now, perhaps, I can rest in peace, knowing that Ahtbyrm won't be indulging in his cannibalistic fantasies...

‘The Victory that you are all building together is the first large warship made since the Calamity, an important ship that will be Limsa Lominsa's hope.’

‘You know, the Victory is the first big ship they've built since the Calamity, and it's something of a source of hope for all Limsans.’

Wafufu isn't afraid but earnest. The English jokes about Ahtbyrm's appetite instead.

The jokes about Ahtbyrm's belly are gone. Like the Japanese, Wafufu cooks to help build the Victory.

English, Wafufu

...at least for today.

‘In any case, I'll be more careful when I hand out my little dishes to them next time.’

‘I want the ship finished soon, so next time I'll hand out the lunches without making mistakes.’

Accepting the quest

Wafufu

Oh, woe is me! I seem to have gone and misplaced four of my packed lunches. Whatever am I to do? I can hear Ahtbyrm's belly grumble from all the way over here!

Wafufu

I'm certain I made enough for everyone, so it must be that I either dropped a few, or gave some to the wrong fellows. Oh, did you hear that? It was Ahtbyrm's belly again. He does not look at all pleased, does he?

Wafufu

I must stay with my cart, but if you could search the Drydocks and see if you cannot find those lunches, I would be eternally grateful. I might even whip together something special for y─ Ah! Did you see that? Ahtbyrm just gave me the evil eye. If those lunches don't turn up soon, I'm afraid he'll come over here and eat me!

Find Wafufu's missing lunches

Lyngstyrm

Don't tell me. You came to collect my lunch. I can see it in them accusing eyes of yours.

Lyngstyrm

Maetimynd

Wafufu be needin' one o' her lunches back, ye say?

Maetimynd

And here I was beginnin' to think the lass had eyes fer me. Not that she's me type, mind ye. I like me women a few hands taller...and a few ponzes heavier...and a few shades bluer, if ye catch me drift.

Return the lunches to Wafufu

Wafufu

Please tell me you found the lunches. I swear Ahtbyrm has shifted several paces closer since you departed!

Wafufu

One, two, three...four! You did it! You found all the missing lunches!

Wafufu

Now, perhaps, I can rest in peace, knowing that Ahtbyrm won't be indulging in his cannibalistic fantasies...
