Summary and analysis

SummaryAnalysis

Ostfyr is pained that travelers reach his gates hurt by yarzons at the Rogue River, but needs every man to hold the garrison. The Maelstrom's fleet is spread too thin, so Yellowjackets hold La Thagran. His name means 'East Fire' in old Roegadyn.

What happens, step by step

  1. Ostfyr hopes to assure the safety of wayfarers at the La Thagran Checkpoint by ridding the area of its dangerous denizens.
  2. You learn that the Rogue River has been particularly perilous of late. Overturn three yarzon nests, and extirpate the yarzons that appear.
  3. You have considerably thinned out the yarzon population at the Rogue River. Return to the La Thagran Checkpoint to let Ostfyr know that the creatures will menace wayfarers no more.
  4. The Yellowjackets are too few in number to guard the La Thagran Checkpoint, and the surrounding regions have not a man to spare. They need your help.

Worth knowing

LorePirates and the Admiral

This is a theme that keeps coming back in La Noscea. The Maelstrom's fleet is spread too thin, with too few people for all its jobs. So are the Yellowjackets who hold La Thagran. That is why adventurers get much of their work.

Lore

Ostfyr guards the La Thagran Eastroad, and his name fits the job. In the old Roegadyn language, Ostfyr means 'East Fire'.

LoreAfter the CalamityTrade and the city

The Rogue River did not exist before the Calamity split the ground open. After that, thieves used it to move their stolen goods. That is how it got its name.

In-game text

Encyclopaedia Eorzea says the yarzons you thin out spray a victim's joints with bile that burns like acid. Then they pierce its skull and suck out the brain.

Title reference

The title echoes 'Wax on, wax off'. That is Mr. Miyagi's training chant from the 1984 film The Karate Kid. Here, the quest's yarzons take the place of the wax.

Characters

Who they are, and what they do in this quest.

Ostfyr

Ostfyr wants the area around the La Thagran Checkpoint made safe, as travelers keep arriving bloodied and bruised.

Other languages

The game was written in Japanese and rewritten, not just translated, for each language. Here is what the other versions say, next to the English.

Japanese
‘That Which Threatens Travellers’
FrenchUne rivière source de danger
‘A River That Is a Source of Danger’
GermanGefahr am Schurkenstrom
‘Danger at the Scoundrels' Stream’
English, Ostfyr

They tell me the yarzons harry them at the Rogue. It pains me to do nothing, but we need every man we have just to hold the garrison.

‘The yarzons are defending their territory more aggressively than usual.’

German explains the yarzons are guarding their territory more aggressively than usual; English only says they harry travelers.

English, Ostfyr

Ah, so you did for the vilekin? Every passer-through owes you a debt of gratitude.

German

Hast du den gefräßigen Yarzons ... Beine gemacht? Hihi.

‘Did you send those greedy yarzons... legging it? Hee hee. Sorry for the joke, I take the threat very seriously.’

„jemandem Beine machen“, literally 'to make legs for someone', means to chase someone off, here a joke on the yarzons.

English, Ostfyr

La Thagran is a vital stronghold, one the Maelstrom would defend themselves, had they the means. The fleet is spread too thin, which is why the Yellowjackets have been called in.

‘This checkpoint is so important that the Maelstrom should really guard it. But the Maelstrom has its hands full with the beast tribes, so we Yellowjackets guard it.’

‘You probably don't know, but this post should normally be guarded by the Maelstrom. Sadly, they are too busy pushing back the barbarian tribes.’

‘Really the Maelstrom should handle the guarding, but it has its hands full with the Wild Tribes.’

‘Unfortunately, they are too busy pushing back the barbarian tribes.’

Ostfyr's 蛮族 (banzoku) means the 'barbarian' beast tribes.

Like in Japanese, the beast tribes keep the Maelstrom away.

Here too the Maelstrom is too busy. Wild Tribes is the German name for the beast tribes.

French gives the reason the Maelstrom is absent: it is busy fighting the beast tribes.

Accepting the quest

Ostfyr

More and more travelers pass through these gates bloodied and bruised each day.

Ostfyr

They tell me the yarzons harry them at the Rogue. It pains me to do nothing, but we need every man we have just to hold the garrison.

Ostfyr

You would do us all a great service were you to thin the yarzon population for us. If you could clear out, say, three of their nests, we'd all be in your debt.

Jostle the yarzons out of their nests and slay them.

Report to Ostfyr.

Ostfyr

Ah, so you did for the vilekin? Every passer-through owes you a debt of gratitude.

Ostfyr

But our numbers are hardly inexhaustible, and your help goes a long way towards preserving the peace.
