Quest giver Ahldskyf
in Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks
Ahldskyf
says a scruffy sailor offered him much gil (money) to meet adventurers. Fearing a link to the kidnappings, he sends you to the guard Glazrael
. A hired captain, he was one gil short of his own ship when the Calamity struck.
Niniya
's first prank turns into a real lead: you spread the kidnapping warning that runs through the main story (MSQ #0-#19).
Where it all starts (Ch. 1): Baderon
's regulars, Niniya
's pranks and the first hints of the kidnappings.
Next in the play order: Way of the Arcanist. Murie
praises your choice and explains that the guildmaster cannot be reached for now.
The lines worth a second look, in the order you hear them, and what each one means.
What was unusual was that he offered a generous sum of gil to be introduced to any adventurers I might know. In my experience, sailors are not known to carry such a wealth of coin about their person, especially with the alehouses of Limsa Lominsa so close at hand. Kidnappings have not been uncommon these past moons...
The title is the joke. The city is full of bars. So a sailor with a full purse is suspicious, just because he hasn't drunk it all away. That is where 'Suspiciously Sober' comes from.

Remember the kidnappings, a thread in the main story. They first come up in MSQ #0 Coming to Limsa Lominsa. In MSQ #4 Lurkers in the Grotto, the farm workers of Summerford fear them. See also Lost and Found.
Ahldskyf
is a hired captain. He says he can love his ship only as much as a paid bride loves her future husband. He was a single gil away from buying his own ship when the Calamity struck.
Talk to Glazrael
, and she explains why this courtyard is called the Octant. It was named after the navigation tool that the famous Jovanni Gnonno invented.

Skaenrael only reminds you that the Crow's Lift is the fastest way down to Bulwark Hall.

Ahldskyf, captain of the trading ship Orion, wants to thank you for bringing back his spilled lavender.
Ahldskyf says a scruffy sailor offered him much gil (money) to meet adventurers. Fearing a link to the kidnappings, he sends you to the guard Glazrael
. A hired captain, he was one gil short of his own ship when the Calamity struck.

Glazrael is a guard at the entrance to East Hawkers' Alley, a busy street full of merchants and travelers.
Glazrael thanks you and promises to have her captain put the Yellowjackets, the city guard, on high alert. She sends you to warn Frydwyb
, who deals with many adventurers. She also explains the Octant is named after a navigation tool invented by Jovanni Gnonno.

Frydwyb works further down East Hawkers' Alley. She offers adventurers the services of retainers, hired helpers.
Frydwyb hears your warning about a strange sailor seeking adventurers, maybe tied to the kidnappings. She promises to warn her customers and keep a sharp lookout, since shady acts often go unnoticed in the busy alley.
The game was written in Japanese and rewritten, not just translated, for each language. Here is what the other versions say, next to the English.
|---|---|
| French | Un marin suspect ‘A suspicious sailor’ |
| German | Der suspekte Seemann ‘The suspicious seaman’ |
By way of thanks for delivering my scattered lavender, I have a nugget of information that may prove useful to you. You see, I was recently approached by an unkempt seafarer─which is not, I admit, particularly unusual for a man in my profession.
Ah, die Kräuterfreundin/der Kräuterfreund!
‘Ah, the herb lover!’
Ahldskyf teases you about the 'illegal' lavender you brought him before. The English Ahldskyf simply thanks you for it.

‘Listen, ship's boy, to thank you for bringing me back these Althyk lavender flowers, I'm going to tell you something interesting.’
‘As thanks for delivering the Arujiku lavender and to mark our meeting, I'll tell you something worth hearing.’
English calls it scattered lavender; French calls it lavender flowers from Althyk.

‘Yesterday a man spoke to me on the Octant - looked like a sailor.’
German pins it down to yesterday, on the Octant; English says only 'recently'.

‘Maybe he wants to overpower the people and sell them.’
Ahldskyf fears that the sailor, who pays gil for adventurers, means to do this to them. The English never says the victims would be sold.

‘I don't know what you think, but me, I find that very fishy.’
Was der vorhat?
‘What is he up to?’
‘...Don't you think it reeks of something suspicious?’
English reasons sailors rarely carry such coin with the alehouses so near; French just says it seems very fishy.

I suggest you take this information and speak with Glazrael
, the guard who stands at the entrance to East Hawkers' Alley. It never hurts to show a spirit of cooperation to the authorities, lass/lad.

...That is disturbing news. Your initiative is appreciated, adventurer. I'll have the captain place the Yellowjackets on high alert.
Ah, and while I have your ear, I need you to visit Frydwyb
and tell her the same thing you told me. You'll find her a bit further down East Hawkers' Alley.
Frydwyb has frequent dealings with adventurers, so any warning you give her should soon spread through the city.
If you wish to visit Bulwark Hall, the Crow's Lift is the swiftest way down.
Greetings, miss/sir. Might I interest you in the services of a retainer?
What's this? Some suspicious seafarer is on the prowl for gullible adventurers? A possible suspect in the recent kidnappings, you think? Well, I'll be sure to pass on that warning to my customers.
What with all the merchants and travelers milling through Hawkers' Alley, these kinds of unsavory activities can often go unnoticed.
In any case, I promise to keep a sharp lookout for anyone being accosted by strange-looking sailors.
