Summary and analysis

SummaryAnalysis

Thubyrgeim takes the satchel so the costume can go back to its owner. She is glad K'lyhia is free of her past; seeing her suffer pained her. She credits you with bringing K'lyhia and the guildmaster together and gives you a new technique.

The Arcanist storyline

Your class story: K'lyhia's past with the exiled pirate Doesmaga, played out at Mealvaan's Gate and Oschon's Embrace.

Pirates and the AdmiralThe Arcanist’s art

What happens, step by step

  1. Acting Guildmaster Thubyrgeim has instructions for you from Foreseer K'lyhia.
  2. Thubyrgeim explains that K'lyhia has already begun her grand strategy that will culminate in Doesmaga's downfall. Your first task in this daring scheme is to deliver a set of instructions to a fisherman known as Rhylzirn, who can be found in Costa del Sol, in eastern La Noscea.
  3. After delivering the list to Rhylzirn, you are rewarded with a fresh herring. Your next task, according to the gruff fisherman, is to take the fish you received to the cook, Opylona.
  4. Opylona, happy to receive the freshly caught herring, insists you take one of her homemade eel pies. The cook then relays instructions from “your arcanist colleague”: you are to deliver the pastry to Master Gegeruju, rather than succumb to the demands of your stomach.
  5. In return for the eel pie, Master Gegeruju rewards you with a heavy purse of gil. Before you can begin counting out your new fortune, however, you receive K'lyhia's next set of instructions from P'ebaloh. It seems you must deliver the bulging sack of coins to Ealdgyth the dancer.
  6. For what seems a somewhat exorbitant price, you give the hefty purse to Ealdgyth in exchange for her well-worn pareo and a mysterious leather satchel. As instructed, take the pareo to Drogo, the warehouse foreman.
  7. Drogo, still questioning his good fortune at receiving Ealdgyth's pareo, gives you a bottle of vintage wine. Take the bottle, and pour a cup for the Morningstar crew members who are drinking at the Flying Shark.
  8. Impressed with the vintage of the wine, Hirskskrat invites you aboard the Morningstar to talk business with Captain Doesmaga. Speak with Hirskskrat at the jetty when you are ready to depart.
  9. K'lyhia's clever tactics coupled with your flawless execution have led to the resounding defeat of the pirate Doesmaga. With her past firmly behind her, the foreseer is able to clearly see the reality she desired all along. Return to the Arcanists' Guild and inform Thubyrgeim of K'lyhia's decision to seek out the guildmaster.
  10. Hand over the odd leather satchel to Thubyrgeim.
  11. After hearing of your exploits and learning of K'lyhia's decision, Thubyrgeim concludes that the pairing of the arcanima-obsessed guildmaster and foreseer will lead to great advances in the art of the arcanist. Citing your involvement as the catalyst for these developments, the acting guildmaster rewards you with a new technique and encourages you to continue improving in your chosen discipline.

More about this quest

Lore

The eel-pie buyer Gegeruju is a rich and powerful Dunesfolk Lalafell. Only one thing is more of a mystery than him: how he got his money.

Easter egg

Costa del Sol has the same name as the beach resort town in Final Fantasy VII. Here, it is where Master Gegeruju keeps his humble home.

Easter egg

The running joke reaches the fight. K'lyhia laughs that Doesmaga's badly beaten crew is not up to the task. K'lyhia puts the odds of victory at 99%.

In-game text

Drogo treasures a pareo. Its item text calls it a colorful piece of cotton underwear. The dancer Ealdgyth wore it for countless summers.

In-game text

Read the item text of the Odd Leather Satchel. It says the veil of mystery around this otherwise plain sack is so thick it could choke an aurochs.

Characters

Who they are, and what they do in this quest.

Yellowjacket

This Yellowjacket serves with Limsa Lominsa's soldiers, who have sent word that Doesmaga's ship lies off Bloodshore.

Once Doesmaga is beaten, this Yellowjacket thanks you. Without your bravery and skill, the Yellowjackets would still be floundering after the pirate. The soldier also sends regards to Thubyrgeim.

Thubyrgeim

Thubyrgeim has news from the Yellowjackets: Doesmaga's ship lies off Bloodshore. She has K'lyhia's first instructions for you.

Thubyrgeim takes the satchel so the costume can go back to its owner. She is glad K'lyhia is free of her past; seeing her suffer pained her. She credits you with bringing K'lyhia and the guildmaster together and gives you a new technique.

K'lyhia

K'lyhia wants to settle the score with the pirate Doesmaga and has already set her grand strategy in motion.

K'lyhia's chain of trades gets you both onto Doesmaga's ship, with her dressed as a dancer. She fights to cast off the shackles he put on her soul, and wins. Then she leaves to seek out the guildmaster, to understand the reality she wants.

Rhylzirn

Rhylzirn is a gruff fisherman in Costa del Sol, in eastern La Noscea, with his hands full of fishing.

Rhylzirn expects you. He takes K'lyhia's list and hands you a fresh herring for the cook Opylona. That list also calls in the Yellowjackets, and at the end Rhylzirn blocks Doesmaga's escape, saying they brought shackles for him.

Opylona

Opylona is the cook for Master Gegeruju, who is expecting his meal at any moment.

Opylona is happy with the herring, since her master likes broiled fish and she hopes for extra coins. She gives you a homemade eel pie and passes on your arcanist colleague's order: take it to Master Gegeruju, do not eat it.

Gegeruju

Master Gegeruju is Opylona's master, at his home in Costa del Sol, waiting for his meal.

Gegeruju speaks in long, fancy words and loves eel pie. He pays you a heavy purse of gil (money) for it. He is a rich, powerful Dunesfolk Lalafell, and how he got his money is a mystery.

P'ebaloh

P'ebaloh is at Master Gegeruju's home in Costa del Sol, holding a message for someone.

A Mealvaan's Gate assessor, K'lyhia, asked P'ebaloh to pass a message to whoever brings Master Gegeruju an eel pie. P'ebaloh hands it to you: give the purse to the dancer Ealdgyth.

Ealdgyth

Ealdgyth is a dancer who asks to see your coin first. She has three children to feed and no time to chat.

Ealdgyth is thrilled with the heavy purse; her children can eat well this week. She was told to expect you, and gives you a leather satchel from K'lyhia and her own pareo, a colorful cotton undergarment she wore for countless summers, for Drogo.

Drogo

Drogo is a warehouse foreman, rushing to finish his work before his master gets angry.

Drogo can hardly believe his luck at getting Ealdgyth's pareo, which he treasures. As K'lyhia arranged, he gives you a bottle of vintage wine for the sailors at the Flying Shark, and warns you they are mean cutthroats.

The title takes up Thubyrgeim's verb for K'lyhia's plan.

English, Opylona

A fresh herring? Why, the master does enjoy a bite of broiled fish of an evening/an afternoon. This might even earn me a few extra coins for this week's wages!

German

Woher wusstest du ... Egal.

‘How did you know ... Never mind.’

English hopes the fish will earn her extra wages; German wonders how you knew she needed it.

English, Opylona

German

Warum bringst du dem Meister Gegeruju nicht diese köstliche Vorspeise, die ich zubereitet habe?

‘Why don't you take Master Gegeruju this delicious starter that I have prepared?’

English says your arcanist colleague insisted you take the pie to Gegeruju; German has Opylona suggesting it herself.

‘A somewhat wacky Miqo'te arcanist asked me to tell you that you had to hand this over to Lord Gegeruju.’

French cook describes K'lyhia as a rather wacky Miqo'te; English just says your arcanist colleague.

English, Gegeruju

And what brings you to my─and I use the term facetiously─humble abode, dear madam/sir? Mmm, such a heavenly aroma. Are you, perchance, carrying an eel pie about your person?

French

Mais vous êtes qui, vous ?

‘But who are you, then?’

German

Ah, du musst die neue Lakaiin/der neue Lakai sein.

‘Ah, you must be the new lackey.’

Japanese

How commendable that you should research the delicacies that tickle my fancy before daring to intrude upon my most ponderous of ponderings. Speaking of ponderous─well, I was speaking of it, at least─I have a hefty purse of gil to persuade you to relinquish your claim on that pastry...

French

Cela mérite bien comme petite récompense...

‘That surely deserves (item) as a small reward...’

English jokes on "ponderous" to offer a hefty purse; French calls it a small reward.

English, Gegeruju

‘Hand over the treat already, or do you want to torture me all day?’

French Miqo'te characters roll their r's like a purr; English gives them no accent.

German's instruction is vaguer, whoever delights him with any delicacy; English specifies an eel pie.

English, Ealdgyth

Yes? If you're looking for a dancer, then I would first see your coin. I've three children to feed, and no time to waste on idle chat.

German

French Ealdgyth is apologetic and never asks for money up front; English demands to see your coin.

‘And there you have it: prrroof complete.’

German

Und so geht mein Traum in Erfüllung - genau wie berechnet!

True to the title's «Démonstration», 'proof', K'lyhia ends with this Q.E.D.

English ends "today's lecture"; German says her dream comes true just as calculated.

English says her tactics still need work; French says she still has one more important strategy to carry out.

English, K'lyhia

German

Man muss sie auch umsetzen können.

‘One must also be able to carry it out.’

German says a strategy is worthless unless someone can execute it; English says her tactics need more work.

English, K'lyhia

I believe, however, that I now understand where my calculations went awry: it is not enough to wish to shape reality; one must also have a complete understanding of the reality one wishes to obtain.

French

Les stratégies serrrvent à construire la réalité que nous désirons... or moi, il y a une réalité que je désire mais dont j'ai détourné les yeux bien trop longtemps.

‘Strategies serve to build the reality we desire... yet as for me, there is a reality I desire but have looked away from for far too long.’

Japanese

「戦術は、望む現実を作るためにある」なのに私は……本当に望む現実から目を背けていたんですから。

German K'lyhia admits she forgot what her own dream was; English states an abstract lesson.

English, Yellowjacket

You have our gratitude. Without your bravery and skill, the Yellowjackets would still be floundering in Doesmaga's wake. Pray also send our regards to Acting Guildmaster Thubyrgeim.

German

Ohne deine Hilfe hätte ich meine Peiniger nie dingfest machen können.

‘Without your help I could never have caught my tormentors.’

English says the Yellowjackets would still be trailing Doesmaga; German says the speaker could never have caught their own tormentors.

English, K'lyhia

Your brutalized crew is not up to the task, Doesmaga! I calculate our odds of victory at 99%!

French

Contrrre eux, nos chances de victoire sont de 99,99 % !

‘Against them, our odds of victory are 99.99%!’

English gives the odds of victory as 99%; French says 99.99%.

English, K'lyhia

Your brutalized crew is not up to the task, Doesmaga! I calculate our odds of victory at 99%!

German

Ich habe alles genauestens berechnet!

German gives no percentage, only that everything is precisely calculated.

English, Doesmaga Poisonheart

Hmph, so ye can handle a few deck scrags. Me axe'll carve yer petty plans into bloody ruin!

French

Y valent pas plus que d'la chair à canon.

‘They're worth no more than cannon fodder.’

Japanese

ふん、所詮使い捨てのコマにすぎぬわ。

‘Hmph, in the end they are nothing more than disposable pawns.’

French Doesmaga writes off his own crew as cannon fodder; English grants that you beat some deckhands.

Japanese Doesmaga writes off his crew as disposable pawns; English grants that you beat some deckhands.

English, Thubyrgeim

Your example may even encourage K'lyhia to improve her combat abilities, although such will surely come in time─after all, she intends to study under the guildmaster's direct instruction. Imagine those two obsessive arcanists, and the complexity of the tactics they will develop...

German

Aber der Gildenmeister hat sie daran erinnert, dass es so viel gibt, für das es sich zu leben lohnt.

‘But the guildmaster reminded her that there is so much worth living for.’

English expects K'lyhia's combat abilities to improve; German says the guildmaster reminded her there is much worth living for.

English, Thubyrgeim

It may very well be that your actions in bringing them together will prove the catalyst that sparks a new era of invention in the art of arcanima.

German

Zuerst hatte ich meine Zweifel, ob du dich mit ganzer Energie dem Studium der Hermetik widmen würdest.

‘At first I had my doubts whether you would devote yourself with all your energy to the study of the hermetic arts.’

English says you may have sparked a new era in arcanima; German says she first doubted your devotion to your studies.

English, Thubyrgeim

You, too, should look to the improvement of your discipline if you are to keep pace with all that is certain to follow. To that end, I offer you a new technique, one I pray allows you to more readily drive back your foes on the battlefield.

German

In diesem Haus der Lehre haben alle etwas von dir lernen können.

Message: Take the purse you received from Master Gegeruju, and hand it to the dancer Ealdgyth as she prepares to return home. K'lyhia

Thubyrgeim

The Yellowjackets have contacted us with word of Doesmaga: it appears his merchant vessel is presently anchored off the coast of Bloodshore.

Thubyrgeim

Once the pirate's business there is concluded, rumor has it that he intends to embark on an extended voyage to the East. It will be some time before he returns once more to Limsa Lominsa.

Thubyrgeim

If we pass up this opportunity, K'lyhia will lose her chance to settle the score with Doesmaga─and we risk the foreseer stumbling once more into blackest melancholy.

Thubyrgeim

Simply getting close enough to Doesmaga will prove difficult. K'lyhia has, however, already formulated a solution, and has set her grand strategy into motion.

Thubyrgeim

Your first task in this undertaking is to travel to Costa del Sol and deliver this set of directions to a fisherman by the name of Rhylzirn. More instructions will be forthcoming.

Deliver the list to Rhylzirn in Costa del Sol

Rhylzirn

What is it ye want, lass/lad? As ye can see, I've me 'ands full with me fishin'...

Rhylzirn

Ah, thanks fer that. I been told to expect ye. 'Ere, yer to take one o' me 'errings and deliver it to the cook, Opylona.

Deliver the fresh herring to Opylona

Opylona

Yes, and how might I help you? Master Gegeruju is expecting his supper/midday meal any moment now...

Opylona

A fresh herring? Why, the master does enjoy a bite of broiled fish of an evening/an afternoon. This might even earn me a few extra coins for this week's wages!

Opylona

Well, you have earned yourself one of my homemade eel pies! I should tell you, though, your arcanist colleague was quite insistent that you take the pie to Master Gegeruju, rather than scoff it down yourself.

Deliver the homemade eel pie to Gegeruju

Gegeruju

How commendable that you should research the delicacies that tickle my fancy before daring to intrude upon my most ponderous of ponderings. Speaking of ponderous─well, I was speaking of it, at least─I have a hefty purse of gil to persuade you to relinquish your claim on that pastry...

P'ebaloh

One moment, if you will. I have been instructed by a Mealvaan's Gate assessor to hand over this message to whoever delivers an eel pie to Master Gegeruju.

Deliver the heavy purse to Ealdgyth

Ealdgyth

Yes? If you're looking for a dancer, then I would first see your coin. I've three children to feed, and no time to waste on idle chat.

Ealdgyth

Oh my, that is quite a purse! My precious darlings will eat like kings this week!

Ealdgyth

The leather satchel is from your Miqo'te friend, and the pareo is from me. That last item you are to deliver to Drogo, the warehouse foreman.

Deliver the well-worn pareo to Drogo

Drogo

I ain't got time fer the likes o' you: if I don't get me work squared away soon, the master'll 'ave me 'ead on a pike. Hm? Ye got summat fer me, ye say?

Drogo

'Ey, now, ain't this Ealdgyth's pareo!?

Drogo

That Miqo'te lass said someone'd be bringin' me a gift what I couldn't refuse, an' stick me with a pitchfork if she weren't tellin' the gods' own truth! 'Ere, yer s'posed to 'ave this bottle o' wine.

Drogo

Take it to the Flyin' Shark an' pour a cup fer the sailors what're drinkin' there. That's what she told me to tell ye, anyroad. I'd watch me back if I was you, though, lass/son─them sailors're the meanest bunch o' cutthroats I ever did see.

Deliver the bottle of vintage wine to the sailors

Hirskskrat

Ye want me to taste yer wine, eh? Well, now, I ain't one to pass up free grog.

Hirskskrat

Llymlaen's teats! Now that's a bloody fine drop! If we ship this stuff to the East, we'll be sellin' bottles by the crate!

Hirskskrat

Yer comin' with us back to the Morningstar. The captain'll want to 'ave a word with ye.

Hirskskrat

Eh? Are ye tryin' to turn down me business proposition!? I reckon ye might want to think again.

Hirskskrat

There's a good lass/lad. An' as fer ye, Miss Dancer, ye stick close to ol' Hirskskrat─it gets damn cold on them long sea voyages, heh heh heh.

K'lyhia

(Shhh. We'll talk later.)

K'lyhia

(Hush now, your name. Make ready. And I'll need that satchel you received from Ealdgyth in a short while...)

Speak with Hirskskrat

Hirskskrat

Ah, fine grog an' a fine woman. The captain'll be pleased with this haul.

K'lyhia

Pray do not stare so. This was the most expedient method of gaining access to the ship.

K'lyhia

I will take that satchel from you now. You may have it back after I take the items I need.

Hirskskrat

'Ey, what mischief are you two about!?

K'lyhia

I was merely borrowing some clothes. You wouldn't wish me to catch a chill from this brisk ocean air, would you?

Hirskskrat

Ye better slip off that ratty robe afore ye meet the captain.

K'lyhia

Of course, of course!

K'lyhia

I'll be happy to show him the performance that awaits!

Doesmaga

The bitch Admiral's lapdog! Come back fer that lesson, 'ave ye?

K'lyhia

It is I who shall be teaching this day! My lecture will focus on the manipulation of reality through applied strategy!

Sweep aside the crew of the Morningstar and defeat Doesmaga

Doesmaga

Well, I ain't fallin' fer yer bloody tricks!

Thubyrgeim

I've been expecting you, your name. As ever, K'lyhia's predictions prove accurate almost down to the moment. And her mind is especially sharp with such a dangerous confrontation in the offing.

Doesmaga

Ye rabid little cur!

K'lyhia

Our numbers matter not; it is strategy that will win this battle!

Doesmaga

Ye think so, eh? Think yer fancy magicks're a match fer my blade!? Ye've got another thing comin'!

K'lyhia

Doesmaga now faces defeat. He will flee to the starboard rail.

K'lyhia

Obvious. Next comes his attempt to escape into the sea.

Doesmaga

Ye think yer pullin' me strings, do ye!? Think I'll dance to yer tune?

K'lyhia

It is at this moment he notices the Yellowjackets I had you summon in my explicit instructions to Rhylzirn.

K'lyhia

Thus concludes today's lecture.

K'lyhia

Thank you, your name. This strategy would not have succeeded without your flawless execution.

K'lyhia

I believe, however, that I now understand where my calculations went awry: it is not enough to wish to shape reality; one must also have a complete understanding of the reality one wishes to obtain.

K'lyhia

It is time I sought out our guildmaster!

K'lyhia

Pray convey to Mistress Thubyrgeim my fondest wishes, and my appreciation for all that she has done for me.

K'lyhia

The true test of my strategies now begins!

Yellowjacket

You have our gratitude. Without your bravery and skill, the Yellowjackets would still be floundering in Doesmaga's wake. Pray also send our regards to Acting Guildmaster Thubyrgeim.

Thubyrgeim

Welcome back, your name. There is much I would ask you, but first, may I have the satchel you received during your assignment?

Doesmaga

Fight, ye worthless sea slugs! I oughta keelhaul the lot o' ye!

K'lyhia

Your brutalized crew is not up to the task, Doesmaga! I calculate our odds of victory at 99%!

Doesmaga Poisonheart

Hmph, so ye can handle a few deck scrags. Me axe'll carve yer petty plans into bloody ruin!

Report to Thubyrgeim at the Arcanists' Guild

Hand over the leather satchel to Thubyrgeim

Thubyrgeim

May I have the leather satchel you received during your assignment?

Thubyrgeim

The original owner needs her costume back, you see. I'll make sure everything is returned safe and sound.

Thubyrgeim

Now, let us speak of K'lyhia. I am glad to know that she has finally freed herself to pursue her heart's desire. And you are to thank for awakening the foreseer to her self-imposed fetters.

Thubyrgeim

The brilliance of K'lyhia's strategies served to blind her to her own feelings, and it pained me to see her suffer so.

Thubyrgeim

Your example may even encourage K'lyhia to improve her combat abilities, although such will surely come in time─after all, she intends to study under the guildmaster's direct instruction. Imagine those two obsessive arcanists, and the complexity of the tactics they will develop...

Thubyrgeim
