NiniyaLimsa Lominsa is a busy port, and not all the merchants that blow in across the Strait are above board, if you know what I mean. How'd the plants end up in the Mizzenmast? Who knows─might've been a deal gone bad. The important thing is you make a name for yourself by handing them in.
‘So, if you find something of the kind, I'm sure the authorities will reward you.’
English says handing them in makes you a name; French says the authorities will reward you.

AhldskyfYes, I am Ahldskyf. You have some herbs you wish me to examine?
FrenchSalut, moussaillon.
‘Hi, ship's boy. I am indeed Ahldskyf, the captain of the Orion.’
Ahldskyf talks like an old sea captain and calls you a young sailor in training. The English Ahldskyf is calm and formal.

Ahldskyf...Yes. As you suspected, these are the highly illegal blooms known as dream flowers. They are the prime ingredient in the creation of “somnus”─a substance whose fragrance is said to lull the sniffer's mind into the sleep of death.
Easter eggThe made-up drug 'somnus' is Latin for 'sleep'. Somnus is also the Roman figure who stands for sleep. It is a good name for a scent said to gently send you 'into the sleep of death'.
GermanImmer-Traum-Kraut!
‘Ever-dream herb!’
Ahldskyf is not joking here. He falls for the prank too and says it fooled you both.

Ahldskyf...Forgive me, I could not resist the jest! These herbs are naught more than Althyk lavender, a common enough export from Limsa Lominsa. In fact, these probably spilled from crates that were loaded onto my very own ship.
GermanDas ist doch bloß stinknormaler Althyk-Lavendel!
‘That's just totally ordinary Althyk lavender!’
GermanNee, Moment mal ...!
‘No, wait a moment...!’
English has him admit he could not resist the jest; German has him suddenly realise his own mistake.

‘But doing the legwork to get information like that is no bad thing.’
It means going in person to find things out. Ahldskyf praises it, prank or not.
‘I don't know who sent you here, but I imagine that person wanted to play a prank on you, a kind of hazing.’
A bizutage is the rite new students go through in French schools. In English, Ahldskyf just calls it fun.
‘Well, it seems we were made fools of, but better safe than sorry.’
A German proverb. Word for word it is 'caution is better than leniency': a play on Vor-sicht, 'fore-sight', and Nach-sicht, 'after-sight'.
