Baiting Buzzards

Quest giver Kazai Buoyzai in Middle La Noscea

Summary and analysis

SummaryAnalysis

Kazai Buoyzai has you lure the buzzards with rotting rat meat and kill them. He makes most of his money hauling food, and says without you he would be sleeping in the gutter. He blames the Calamity, a great disaster, for the starving scavengers.

Kazai's cargo runs

Rival haulers at the Skylift keep food moving after the Calamity, seen from a fish trader's side.

The Skylift

The Skylift (Ch. 4): the cargo crunch of post-Calamity rebuilding, seen by the people who run it.

After the CalamityTrade and the city

What happens, step by step

  1. Kazai Buoyzai, a cargo transporter at the Skylift, wants you to slay buzzards that have been attacking wagons on the road.
  2. Drawn by the scent of meat, hungry buzzards have been swooping down on food-laden wagons en route to the De Nevelle Checkpoint. Turn the birds' taste for dead flesh to your advantage by taking a sack of rotting rat meat to their nest and luring the avian scavengers into a deadly ambush.
  3. You have slain the buzzards. Return to the Skylift and report to Kazai Buoyzai.
  4. The lingering influence of the Calamity affects more than just the lives of Eorzea's citizens─even the realm's scavengers are forced into uncharacteristic and desperate behaviors. Though much work has been done to repair the devastation, the scars will be long in fading.
Where it leads

Next in the play order: Tactical Planning. Thubyrgeim has you slay three roselings and three wild jackals, calling three the perfect sample size, then sends you with K'lyhia.

Report to Kazai Buoyzai at the Skylift

Kazai BuoyzaiSeems even the scavengers are findin' the pickin's scarce since the Calamity hit, otherwise ye'd never see 'em tryin' aught so bold. Fortune didn't favor 'em worth spit this time, though, eh?
LoreAfter the Calamity

The buzzards are another after-effect of the Calamity. Food has become so hard to find that even scavengers now dare to raid wagons on the road.

‘Buzzard, You Said Buzzard’
GermanDen Bussarden an die Gurgel
‘Go for the Buzzards' Throats’
English, Kazai Buoyzai

Most days, them feathered hellions stay well enough away, but it seems they can't resist a wagon what's loaded with meat. Well, I say we make use o' that weakness to lure the greedy buggers into a trap.

‘Normally the beasts are content with carrion, but they probably smelled the tasty meat in the transport crates.’

English says the birds usually keep away; German says they are usually content with carrion.

English, Kazai Buoyzai

Take this here sack o' rotting rat meat and set it down in vulture territory─that be where the buzzards make their nests. When the bastards show up for the feast, ye start breakin' beaks with a vengeance. Easy.

‘You shut the beaks of those cursed buzzards once and for all!’

Kazai uses «clouer le bec», literally 'to nail the beak', an idiom for shutting someone up. Here the beaks are real.

English, Kazai Buoyzai

Didn't get yer eyes pecked out, did ye? Them buzzards be a nasty lot. But the last wagon made it through with nary a morsel lost, so I'd say ye've plucked enough o' their thievin' hides to secure the route.

German

Hervorragend! Den Bussarden ist das Krächzen vergangen! Und die Fleischtransporte sind wieder sicher.

‘Excellent! The buzzards have had the squawk knocked out of them! And the meat shipments are safe again.’

Kazai twists „jemandem vergeht das Lachen“, 'someone stops laughing', said when someone's fun is over.

English, Kazai Buoyzai

Didn't get yer eyes pecked out, did ye? Them buzzards be a nasty lot. But the last wagon made it through with nary a morsel lost, so I'd say ye've plucked enough o' their thievin' hides to secure the route.

‘Oh, you, seeing that delighted look on your face, I guess everything went as planned.’

German

Den Bussarden ist das Krächzen vergangen!

‘The buzzards have lost all urge to croak!’

‘Thanks for your trouble, so you pulled it off nicely.’

English jokes about your eyes being pecked out; French reads success from your happy face.

English jokes about your eyes being pecked out; German jokes the buzzards have lost their croak.

English jokes about your eyes being pecked out; Japanese simply thanks you for succeeding.

English, Kazai Buoyzai

Ye have me thanks, lass/lad. I make most of me coin haulin' foodstuffs, and I'd be beddin' down in the gutter within the week if it weren't for yer help.

‘Unfortunately for me, that's my core business, which means I'm often targeted.’

‘The buzzards seem to have worked out that loads of food make easy prey.’

English says without your help he'd be in the gutter within a week; French says he is often targeted.

French explains why he is targeted, food loads being easy prey; English says he'd have been ruined.

English, Kazai Buoyzai

Seems even the scavengers are findin' the pickin's scarce since the Calamity hit, otherwise ye'd never see 'em tryin' aught so bold. Fortune didn't favor 'em worth spit this time, though, eh?

‘I kind of feel sorry for the creatures, since they've had hardly anything to eat themselves since the Calamity, but we have to think of ourselves first.’

Kazai pities the hungry birds, but people must come first. The English only mocks their bad luck.

English, Kazai Buoyzai

Seems even the scavengers are findin' the pickin's scarce since the Calamity hit, otherwise ye'd never see 'em tryin' aught so bold. Fortune didn't favor 'em worth spit this time, though, eh?

‘Goes to show times are hard for everyone, eh.’

English gloats that luck failed the birds; French sympathizes that times are hard for everyone.
