SummaryAnalysis

The Skylift and Swiftperch

Rebuilding after the Calamity: the swamped Skylift, and Swiftperch, the village the Serpent Reavers attack in Ch. 6.

What happens, step by step

  1. Baderon, the proprietor of the Drowning Wench, has a suggestion to put you on the road towards new adventures.
  2. With the Skylift the focus of all the cargo passing over the Descent, the workers there have little time to tend to any other tasks that might arise. Make your way to the area and speak with Wyrkrhit, the head of the operation.
  3. The Skylift is being overwhelmed with the constant flood of cargo needed for the restoration efforts. Offer what aid you can, and help prevent the operation from grinding to a halt.
Where it leads

Next in the play order: Keeping It Fresh. Kazai Buoyzai sends you for three water sprite cores to chill his fish, then checks you know he does not mean "dance" literally.

Worth knowing

Lore

The Descent swallowed a river, the Nym, along with the land it flowed through and countless lives. It got its scary name so no one else would fall over the edge.

LoreTrade and the city

Lominsan engineers built the Skylift. It keeps the land trade routes open from the eastern outposts of Aleport and Bronze Lake.

Patch change

Courier for a Day was a delivery job from Wyrkrhit that came right after this quest. Patch 5.3 removed it while cutting down the A Realm Reborn main story quests.

Characters

Who they are, and what they do in this quest.

Baderon

Baderon has an idea for where you could go next, now that you are rested.

Baderon points you to the Skylift in middle La Noscea, a big scaffold on the cliff called the Descent, used to haul cargo. He hears the workers need help with odd jobs, and sends you to its head, Wyrkrhit.

Wyrkrhit

Wyrkrhit is the head of the Skylift, a wooden lift with pulleys that hauls cargo up the cliff of the Descent.

Wyrkrhit welcomes you because Baderon sent you. He says one fiery blast from a huge dragon split the ground and made the cliff, so they built the lift. He has too few workers and a growing list of headaches.

Other languages

The game was written in Japanese and rewritten, not just translated, for each language. Here is what the other versions say, next to the English.

Japanese
‘To the Skylift’
FrenchLe jour de l'Ascenciel
‘The Day of the Ascenciel (the sky-lift)’
GermanAuf zum Himmelszug
‘Off to the Sky Hoist (Himmel 'sky' + Zug 'pull')’

Beaucoup de gens me louent tes exploits d'aventurière/er.

‘Lots of people praise your exploits as an adventurer to me.’

‘You've started to get the look of a real adventurer.’

French Baderon says people praise your growing reputation; English just asks if you're rested and ready.

Japanese Baderon remarks that you now look like a true adventurer; English asks if you're rested and ready.

English, Baderon

Ye've likely seen the lads and lasses out there usin' it to 'aul cargo up the cliff face. 'Ard labor, that, and I 'ear they could use an enterprisin' soul to pick up the odd jobs what no other bugger 'as time to deal with.

‘Besides, the area is anything but safe.’

English remarks the work is hard labor; German says the area is far from safe.

English, Baderon

Track down the 'ead o' the operation─bloke by the name o' Wyrkrhit─and 'e'll be sure to put ye to work on a task or two.

‘It's an old pal of mine who runs the place. His name's Wyrkrhit. Go see him, tell him I sent you, and I'm sure he'll gladly give you some work.’

Baderon and Wyrkrhit are old friends, which the English never says.

English, Baderon

Track down the 'ead o' the operation─bloke by the name o' Wyrkrhit─and 'e'll be sure to put ye to work on a task or two.

‘It's an old mate of mine who runs the place.’

French makes Wyrkrhit an old friend of Baderon's; English only calls him the head of the operation.

English, Wyrkrhit

Baderon sent ye out here, did he? Then consider yerself welcome at the Skylift.

‘Mr Baderon sent you, you say? Ah, so you are [name]. Welcome to the Skylift.’

‘Is it that old rascal Baderon who sent you?’

Wyrkrhit is courteous and speaks politely. The English makes him a gruff, cursing foreman.

French Wyrkrhit fondly calls Baderon an old rascal; English just names him.

English, Wyrkrhit

Look at that bloody cliff, will ye? One blast o' fiery hell from that huge dragon was all it took to split the ground in half.

‘Quite a cliff, isn't it? During the Calamity five years ago, a giant black dragon came flying in. My memory of it is hazy, but one blast of its fire did this...’

‘Impressive cliff face, isn't it? It was formed during the Calamity five years ago, when the black dragon made the earth shake.’

Wyrkrhit dates the dragon to the Calamity. The English gives no date, and the dragon is just huge.

Here too, the cliff has a date and a black dragon.

English, Wyrkrhit

Look at that bloody cliff, will ye? One blast o' fiery hell from that huge dragon was all it took to split the ground in half.

‘It's quite a cliff, isn't it?’

English, Wyrkrhit

Look at that bloody cliff, will ye? One blast o' fiery hell from that huge dragon was all it took to split the ground in half.

‘It came about in the catastrophe five years ago, when the black dragon made the earth quake.’

English says one fiery blast split the ground; German says the dragon made the earth quake.

English, Wyrkrhit

Well, one of 'em, at least. If the gods were kind─an' they ain't─I'd have about a dozen more workers to handle me growin' list o' headaches...

‘So, if you are free, I would have work for you.’

‘Come and see me if you would like to lend a hand.’

‘There is work I would like to ask of you right away, so please speak to me once you are ready.’

French offers you work directly; English only grumbles that the unkind gods deny him a dozen workers.

German invites you to come and help; English only grumbles that the unkind gods deny him workers.

Japanese asks you outright to take on work when ready; English only grumbles about lacking workers.

Baderon

'Ow do ye fare, your name? Rested and ready to expand yer 'orizons?

Baderon

Well, then, I've an idea o' where ye might try 'eadin' next. 'Ave ye 'eard o' the Skylift out in middle La Noscea?

Baderon

If ye've ever visited Woad Whisper Canyon, then ye must've been up and down the thing at least once. It's that big bleedin' scaffoldin' attached to the Descent.

Baderon

Ye've likely seen the lads and lasses out there usin' it to 'aul cargo up the cliff face. 'Ard labor, that, and I 'ear they could use an enterprisin' soul to pick up the odd jobs what no other bugger 'as time to deal with.

Baderon

Track down the 'ead o' the operation─bloke by the name o' Wyrkrhit─and 'e'll be sure to put ye to work on a task or two.

Speak with Wyrkrhit at the Skylift.

Wyrkrhit

Baderon sent ye out here, did he? Then consider yerself welcome at the Skylift.

Wyrkrhit

Look at that bloody cliff, will ye? One blast o' fiery hell from that huge dragon was all it took to split the ground in half.

Wyrkrhit

Cargo still needs to get through, though, so this mess o' wood an' pulleys was our solution to the problem.

Wyrkrhit

Well, one of 'em, at least. If the gods were kind─an' they ain't─I'd have about a dozen more workers to handle me growin' list o' headaches...
